Is it a bug or on purpose that when I switch out my special weapon from one to another or back that I end up with zero ammo for it?

Register on Bungie.net and it's pretty self explanatory. You'll see listings for Destiny beta. You'll make a profile and under profile there will be a codes section. They'll send it there.

that is by design, switch any weapon and you'll have 0 ammo. The way around this is buying the ammo packs from the gunsmith, but they don't work in MP.

Found all 5 gold chests earlier and unlocked the upgraded speeder, better to get it free than spend thousands in the shop

Well this is an okay little shooter from someone who is not big FPS player. I had fun for a while. Probably would be better with a team. I'm not sure what's going on with the randoms that show up in the game. And there appear to be some side activities in the mission areas that definitely can not be tackled solo. It's got a little bit a Mass Effect feel to it, too, I think, at least in the design I encountered early.

I tried playing a mission on the higher level for the challenge, and it was completely cool until the mission boss. Never had enough ammo left for him.

The game looks good, but I don't think it's going to impress the photorealism geeks. On the other hand, the ability to traverse pretty darn big environments without pauses or loading screens or texture pop was impressive. And enemies are visible from further away than I have ever encountered in a game.

You have to remember this is just a beta as well. They'll have time to polish it.

I had this preordered and I am not sure I have much interest in keeping it.

I just don't care much for multiplayer and I have my doubts that the single player will be much fun.
