and a lot expand things way beyond what was there in the scene the way it was shot and often they fail to bring up mid-shadows and lower mid-tones, etc. and don't really make proper, ideal use of it (it depends though, some HDR is done very, very well and HDR in general could, theoretically, make things equal or better in every case, to one degree or another be it tiny or large) |

Some colourists feel the same way, that just bolting highlights onto an SDR-type average brightness isn't what they'd do because of how the perceptual effect can indeed drown out the lows and mids, so they'd rather raise the brightness of the whole scene. But on my TV I'm just not getting that effect of the lower tones being drastically darker than the SDR equivalent disc, there's a smooth transition from lows to mids to highs.
I don't know if anyone's done an actual signal analysis of what the highest peak is but the MaxCLL metadata is pegged at just 343 nits, i.e. it's just not overwhelmingly bright in those bright portions even when next to the MaxFALL (brightest single average frame) of 106 nits, it's barely two 'stops' brighter in the highest peak than the highest average which is what baffles me when people keep saying that the brights are so bright that they overwhelm the mids and lows. That's why I keep wondering if the tone mapping is the difference maker, that if the SDR-esque average brightness is being dropped lower than it should be then it will make those rather modest peaks look much brighter perceptually. |

The underlying master had so much promise.
Damn shame. |

Figured I’d leave a tidbit here that I’m reworking this original teaser trailer for The Goonies into HD. I’m redoing all of the logos and animation by hand in HD. It’s a MASSIVE project that has taken (and will take) forever. But I think it’s going to be worth the effort in the end.
Little taster (audio is a work in progress). I also have the ET portion completed. We’ll see how Close Encounters and Superman turn out. I have no idea how I’m going to tackle those yet… Last edited by Croweyes1121; 06-18-2021 at 11:13 PM. |

Though given this was an upmix, would listening to the original stereo mix be a better option for clearer dialogue? I might remux it to the 4K version if that's the case. Also how is the 4K version, is it worth buying over the original? Is the new DTS mix clearer and better than the old Dolby TrueHD? |
