Days of Heaven (The Criterion Collection)
HDR10 and Dolby Vision FEL Mastering display luminance: 1000 nits white, 0.0001 nits black MaxCLL: 267 nits MaxFALL: 89 nits Heatmap - Gamut Visualization - Tonemap (BT.2100 to BT.709) Album [Show spoiler] Not very bright except for the title and considering it was done under Malick's supervision, it's probably the way he wants it. But man this is one beautiful restoration. Absolutely breathtaking. It's a must own in my book. |

Stalag 17 (Kino Lorber) HDR10 and Dolby Vision FEL Mastering display luminance: 1000 nits white, 0.0001 nits black No static metadata for MaxCLL nor MaxFALL Album Heatmap [Show spoiler] Tonemap (BT.2100 to BT.709) [Show spoiler] Pretty conservative grade with mostly reserved averages but still has some bright highlights at around 2-300 nits. Very good contrast with retained shadow details and deep blacks. Looks similar to The Seventh Seal. Once scene in particular has severe compression artifacts (visible in the sky in cap #5) and some scenes have optical printing which naturally looks soft. Otherwise it looks excellent with very fine grain. Last edited by nissling; 04-27-2024 at 01:00 PM. |

When I get the Ocean's trilogy from Target (my order hasn't shipped yet), I plan on running all 3 through their paces. Gotta shake off the rust and remember my old processes first, though.

I remember a small amount of discs that made me squint from brightness, it's usually all when it's a dark scene and sudden brightness, first one I remember affecting everyone in the living room was Encanto when the candle goes bright during a flashback. E.t. had a bunch of bright sources and oddly enough, the book of life on blu ray, whenever the candle person appeared fully in frame, my eyes couldn't handle how bright he was, wonder how that movie would've been on 4k blu ray. The hdr version on disney+ looks quite nice.

Vast majority of this stays under the 1k nit window but it hits toward that peak pretty often. A fairly aggressive grade, all things considered.
My strongest captured highlight (1083 nits) and frame (108 nits): ![]() ![]() WCG gets used pretty regularly in the background of a lot of shots I captured but stands out in two settings, a bar in Philly and during Conlan's entrance: ![]() ![]() |

Decided to update my Past Posts link to include every analysis done in this thread, organized by movie title alphabetically with the author included in parenthesis.
So if you ever want to check for a title, just use that link. If I missed anything, let me know. Last edited by Macatouille; 04-30-2024 at 01:11 AM. |

Phantom Thread (Universal Studios)
HDR10 Mastering display luminance: 1000 nits white level, 0.005 nits black level MaxCLL: 637 nits MaxFALL: 75 nits This is a rare bird. Seems like they're using a mild low pass filter. Blacks have a tendency of looking lifted, which almost makes me think like they're trying to emulate the look of a theatrical print. Peaks are not super high most of the time but it does indeed reach bright territories (the photo shoot is pretty obvious despite peaking at around 360 nits). A really, really nice and stable presentation in my humble opinion even if the grain looks a bit chunky (even for 200 and 500T). Too bad it seems to be OOP or at least unavailable at most retailers. ![]() Deep Red (Arrow Video) HDR10 and Dolby Vision MEL Mastering display luminance: 1000 nits white level, 0.0001 nits black level No static metadata for MaxCLL or MaxFALL Pretty consistent averages and good highlights. The strong peaks at around 8-900 nits seem to indicate a proper conversion from Cineon LOG to ST.2084 as they're limited to just a few pixels (an SDR to HDR conversion would normally make them much lower or the entire image brighter). Colors look fantastic too. Album Heatmaps [Show spoiler] Gamut visualization [Show spoiler] Tonemaps (BT.2100 to BT.709) [Show spoiler]

Strongest highlight (937 nits), frame (119):
![]() ![]() Didn't find a ton of WCG usage in my shots, just detail work: ![]() ![]() Despite that, I think it's a great looking disc: subdued in darker shots but with strong highlights that most sets can wrangle. An easy upgrade for one of the best action movies of the '90s. Fixed, and added your latest to the list. |
