I used Paypal to order cases for The Third Man, The 400 Blows, and Last Year at Marienbad. The lady on the phone said they had all three in stock, so they should arrive in a week to two weeks. I haven't received a receipt or delivery confirmation email? Should I be worried or contact Criterion?

Since you talked to someone on the phone about your order, that may be why you didn't get an email. I wouldn't worry. Give it the allotted time. And if you haven't received your order in 2.5 weeks, give them a follow up call.

I gave up hope on ever seeing my copy of "Bigger Than Life" that I loaned out back (and subsequently never got around to watching on Blu-ray myself)

I ordered that, along with By Brakhage (canceled Amazon order awhile ago) and Mystery Train, all for $91 not too shabby..... I am a little apprehensive about Deepdiscount though.....

Well I mean I called them before I placed the order to ask about alternative payment methods, which, according to the woman, were paypal or money order. I HATE money orders, so paypal was all that was left. Hopefully the stuff arrives soon.

Exactly. I neglected to say that most of my Criterion DVDs' were ordered used through Amazon through second party sellers. I check the feedback and carefully choose who I buy from. I've only been burnt once - and that was a damaged case; the DVD still played perfectly.

There's only been a replacement case, if that's what you mean. And a region B release, but no re-release by Criterion.

Universal just released it, so it is highly unlikely that Criterion will release it. Probably goes the same for films like Armageddon, The Rock, Fear and Loathing..., and Soderbergh's Traffic. I may be wrong, but who knows!

Thanks for the reply but $650 is a bit much for me.

Plus I don't really want to buy DVD's anymore, unless there is a 100% chance that a movie is not going to be released on Blu-ray.

What is best representitive? Hmmm, I guess I could say wait until this fall/winter when Breathless (Godard is the same director who made the Pierrot le Fou you have) and Seven Samurai (Kurosawa is the same director who made the Kagemusha you have). These 2 directors have other Criterion blus out as well but these 2 I named that comes out are their most popular. Godard and Kurosawa are the 2 of the big names of Criterion if that helps you.

I know Seven Samurai has been unofficially announced, but when was Breathless confirmed? This kind of sucks (though a blu-ray would be great) if true since I just bought the dvd, and didn't want to have to rebuy it so soon. The three disc remastered edition of Seven Samurai was actually what got me into criterion, since it's my all time favorite film. Can't imagine life without Criterion now

If there is one film that exemplifies everything the collection is about, it is Fellini's 8 1/2.

8 1/2 is a terrific film. If you're looking for a good intro into criterion, here's what I would suggest

The Third Man - Carol Reed (out of print, but you can still find it at Barnes N Noble and Amazon, though it may only be third party seller now)
8 1/2 - Fredrico Fellini
Vivre Sa Vie - Jean Luc Godard
Yojimbo & Sanjuro - Akira Kurosawa
Days of Heaven - Terrence Malick
The Seventh Seal - Ingmar Bergman
M - Fritz Lang
The 400 Blows - Francois Truffaut
Breathless - Jean Luc Godard (DVD only right now)
Seven Samurai - Akira Kurosawa (DVD right now but a blu-ray release has been announced for the fall/winter. My all time favorite film and what got me into Criterion)

Even those are only scratching the surface. But these are the most accessible and iconic films I can think of to get you started. Welcome to the criterion club!

There was a Criterion newsletter cartoon for a 50th anniversary of Breathless on blu-ray. Which is 50 years this year.

I mean, the theatrical re-release indicated a blu-ray release was imminent, but I jumped the gun and bought the dvd before that was all announced. D'oh!

I just realized something... do no Criterion titles use the standard 'Blu-Ray' logo cases? They all have cover art that extends the full length of the case unlike how most leave a small but noticeable blue gap at the top?

I never noticed that before...
