All the new Dark Force releases should have the Demon flexing, without saying a word, for 2 minutes before the movie starts and, of course, a 10 minutes non-stop flexing video in the bonus with audio commentary about how to perfectly flex for the camera.

![]() ![]() When a baboon breaks out of a cage in a university laboratory, several students are infected with a “rage virus” that turns them into bloodthirsty zombie-like killers. The college newspaper photographer who is bitten by the primate inadvertently spreads it to a girl, who, in turn, transmits it to three notorious fraternity date rapists when they attempt to take advantage of her in a dorm room. As a college journalist and his new girlfriend, played respectively by Patrick Lowe (Slumber Party Massacre II) and Cheryl Arutt (Charles in Charge), race against time to investigate the outbreak, along with a research scientist played by Bo Svenson (Walking Tall Part II), the body count piles up around campus, culminating in a Halloween party that turns into a bloodbath of epic proportions. Decades before the truth became stranger than fiction, the 1988 Italian-American horror co-production, Primal Rage, filmed in Florida, directed by Vittorio Rambaldi, and co-written by the amazing Umberto Lenzi (The Tough Ones, Cannibal Ferox), flew under the radar as an obscure gem that anticipated plot developments from the 2002 blockbuster, 28 Days Later..., and even a real-life news story involving monkeys that attacked a health worker and took off with COVID-19 blood samples days before this review in 2020. Despite the uncanny parallels with headline news, this movie is a vestige from a comparably innocent era, and it benefits from plentiful comedic moments, both intentional and unintentional. The music soundtrack is so 1980s that it should have a warning label. In addition to a buoyantly catchy opening credits song, “Say the Word” by The Facade Band, and some headbanging guitar tracks by Steel Grave, we have a score from none other than Claudio Simonetti of Goblin. Primal Rage is a fast-paced movie that graces us with some gloriously over-the-top moments. I love one particular scene where a college professor is putting the moves on a female student in exchange for a passing grade before both of them fall prey to a contaminated student. I also love how the three above-mentioned fraternity villains dress in skeleton outfits, in the vein a party scene of The Karate Kid, before slaughtering a number of elaborately costumed college kids during the concluding Halloween festivities. My favorite character, a transfer student played by Sarah Buxton (21 Jump Street, Nightmare Beach), is probably the most recognizable face next to Svenson. who was a fixture in 1970s and 1980s drive-in movies before his career was resurrected years later by Quentin Tarantino. None of the actors earned Academy Awards, but they all come across as likably convincing. One female character has a dorm room poster of Spuds MacKenzie from the Bud Light commercial ads. If you are old enough to remember Spuds MacKenzie, then you are in the primary risk group for COVID-19. This Dark Force Entertainment Blu-ray features a wonderfully detailed transfer that looks great on my 4K television. A supplementary interview with producer William J. Immerman is icing on the cake. "This film is notable for it's 70' style mean-spirited violence, which includes some fairly graphic and shocking moments, including sharks munching on a girl and a man getting his face burned on a barbecue. Plus beautiful underwater photography that really pops in glorious Cinemascope. Topped off with a great all-star cast Stephen Boyd (Ben Hur, Fantastic Voyage), David Ladd (The Serpent and the Rainbow), Chuck Woolery (The Monkees), Rosey Grier (The Thing With Two Heads), Darby Hilton (Malibu Express) and the gorgeous Cheryl Ladd of Charlie's Angels fame. Dark Force is bringing this relic to high def blu-ray for nostalgia's sake: Darkforcedvd.com"
