Black clothes and dark hair become pits of dark nothingness or pools of macroblocking. It’s not the worst, I suppose, but it’s terribly inconsistent from scene to scene. Maybe it’s a materials issue? Or maybe just a rushed restoration job?
Sounds like a typical CR/DF release to me

For the sake of full disclosure, I got a new 4K TV last week (in prep for DotD UHD), so I’ve been paying extra close attention to the image on everything I’ve been watching. I thought I’d settled on the perfect settings for my display...until I put this disc in. I’ve watched several discs since I got the TV and have been happy with the image. Once PRIMAL RAGE started, I kept thinking maybe I had some setting messed up, but nope. It’s a chunky noise crushed black affair.

I don't have a fancy 4k tv, but many of my DVD's from other labels look far better to me than almost any DF BD in my collection... Why, I don't know.

Trust me, there’s nothing fancy about my 4K setup That said, I’ve been happy with its performance on everything else I’ve played on it so far. In addition to the issues I mentioned, there’s also a somewhat frequent sibilance problem on the audio track. I’m actually a big fan of this big dumb film, so this is all somewhat disappointing. Still, it’s not a total wash. About 60% of it looks decent enough.

I guess I haven’t seen too many straight DF releases to recognize the pattern yet, but the release of BLUE MONKEY will certainly put your theory to the test. I’ve wanted BLUE MONKEY on blu for quite some time. Fingers crossed.

Sorry if I've missed it, but when should Blue Monkey be available for purchase?

I didn't see anything in the comment that suggested dvds existed in the 80's - he was saying his friend doesn't like watching 80's films on blu ray because they look too pristine but when she watches a rip of a dvd of an 80's movie it actually "looks like an 80's movie" to her because it's not a perfect picture.

Seems like this phenomenon is limited to films. Does anyone prefer to read dirty, crumpled books with faded print or listen to music on beat-up 5th generation copies of cassettes?

After waiting for an untold number of weeks for it to arrive from Amazon, I finally checked out Teenage Hitchhikers. Fun through and through, and what a gorgeous transfer. $5K for the rights is a remarkable deal I must say.

Obviously none of the 'fans' of damaged films were around and had to deal with them @ drive in's in the 70's & 80's.

It's a phase the kids are going through is all.

Does the drive-in double feature of Gates of hell/psycho from Texas have English subtitles? I can’t find an answer on the official Blu-ray page. I want to buy it but can’t watch without English subtitles.

Digital compression and macroblocking issues didn't exist in the 80's either. Yeah, AVI looks like shit, but in a completely shitty digital way. Where are the tracking lines? Tape slippage problems? Splices? If you want to watch an inferior presentation, at least do it with a fourth generation copy of a copy VHS.

He was replying to a post I made about people who seem to enjoy really bad zero budget movies more than films that are more polished and generally more popular with audiences. I wasn't referring specifically to people who like to watch beat-up prints for the sake of watching a "grindhouse" version because it's cool.

Vinyl records vs CD?

Vinyl records have far inferior frequency response,. SNR, plus snap crackles and pops yet many prefer their sound.

The damage gives the film a different feel and ambience, which is why in the past some film directors have introduced artificial damage into their movies to emulate that feel. It increases the grittiness.

Shoot on film if you want grittiness. Make it 16mm for that extra special touch

On a related note, I just started revisiting the TV series LOST on Blu and I noticed, for the first time, there was a hair and some vertical lines visible in one of the early episodes. It took me by surprise. Never expected to see film "damage" in something shot for TV in 2003.

I interpreted "in horrible condition" to mean "beat-up prints."

Exactly. A shit dvd rip looks like a shit dvd rip. That's like saying I prefer to watch 1gb blu-ray rips because it reminds me of 90s movies.
