Can't wait until 2012 for "The Hobbit"!
just proves don't list to the naysayers and these screencaps they showed was a lie they don't even look like that at all. There is fine detail in these releases.

One of the few, along with X-MEN: The Last Stand.

Keep in mind Top Gun was a remix from the original 5.1 70MM masters, which is the TrueHD track on the Blu-ray.

What's more, our sources are NOW telling us that WHV (and their now in-house New Line label) is ALSO planning to release Peter Jackson's long-awaited The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Editions on Blu-ray sometime this year. No kidding. We suspect that, now that The Hobbit films are finally about to begin filming, the studio is eager to get more product on store shelves to keep the franchise fresh in the minds of fans. The Extended Rings films on BD are the obvious choice for this year. Farther down the line, of course, there will be the obvious Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D versions of The Hobbit films, and sooner or later an "ultimate" box set of all the films with all new extras custom created by Jackson. Anyway, our sources tell us to expect some kind of official news on all this (re: Rings: Extended and Kubrick) from the studio in the next several weeks

It's breaking news, so looks like you're the first...

Will be interesting to see exactly what is planned for the release, and whether or not the films will get an upgrade in terms of video quality...

I'm just glad the EEs are coming out so soon after the Theatrical Cuts. I only ever bought the EE version of LotRs on DVD. I've planned to do the same with Blu-ray.

Of course, with DVD I got to wait a year between each release so it didn't break the bank...

So basically, if the Hobbit films are any good, you'd get an ultimate box set of the "War of the Ring" sometime in 2014 or 2015...?

Considering how many of the original cast is coming back for small roles in the Hobbit films, I wonder if Jackson will make good on his "idea" (in one of the commentaries on the extended editions) to re-edit the entire thing in chronological order....

Just by doing these Hobbit films, it almost makes the great "prologue" that starts of the Fellowship of the Ring redundant when you watch the whole thing in one setting. This isn't like the Prequels of Star Wars. We got very, very vague information...if at all. The prologue that starts Fellowship pretty much tells the tale that these Hobbit films will cover....

I wonder how Jackson and his team will get around that....

Either way, I'd just be happy with Fellowship Extended. It's a masterpiece. I really wish he would go back and re-edit Towers and King.

This is good news.......I hope this can be confirmed soon. With Star Wars, and more than likely the complete Potter box set being released by the end of the year, it is going to take some planning ahead to save some money for all of these great releases.

Have you read The Hobbit? The only part of the LOTR Trilogy prologue that covers the same ground as The Hobbit is the 10 seconds when they show Gollum pick up the ring, lose it and then have Bilbo find it.

Most of the prologue is from LOTR itself (though not in a prologue in the book, like the movie) or from ancillary works like The Simarillion, Unfinished Tales and The History of Middle-Earth.

Well, I haven't read the Hobbit since I was 7 or 8. I'm 32 now. My memory of it is pretty much nonexistent. Still, what the hell does the bridge film cover after the Hobbit?

Again, after watching the prologue in Fellowship, do we really need more information?

That's what I'm getting at. That's how good that prologue is.

There is no bridge film, that was discussed early on but they're not doing it. It's just The Hobbit split into 2 films.

I hope that the BD mastering team spends $$ this time around on Fellowship and goes back to early-generation film elements and digital files to get a higher-resolution HD master or DI source. Even though I know what we see on the current BD in terms of image quality reflects the final film "master" as it currently exists, The image of Fellowship still left me wanting, and if anything can be done (even if means re-scanning the original analog 35mm source material and recomposing) I'd want it.

Well, thats not entirely true. They are no longer doing one movie for the Hobbit and one as a "bridge" as originally discussed. So you are correct there.

As a modification, they are splitting the Hobbit material across 2 films, but including "filler material" from other works, prologues, epilogues, whatever occurred during that time but not directly mentioned in the hobbitt book itself. This should include a lead into, or discussion of, stuff that would in a nonsequential way tie the films together anyway. That's how they can make 2 movies out of it that are about 2 1/2 hours each.

Add Jurassic Park trilogy to that list. Indy is celebrating his 30th anniversary this year so it could be much, much more than epic.
