Technically it is a new transfer (it is a 3D transfer), so the marketing/PR monkey wasn't lying, but it doesn't mean it was transfer from a good master.

"Wax edition" is the term give the re-release Ultimate Hunter Edition that had a lot of DNR applied, giving a "waxy look" to the characters.

So it looks like we will have to wait for 4K format finally come out, because only then they will be forced to do a proper remaster.

First MPEG2 edidion has huge compression problems, weak contrast, and very dull colors, so its still not perfect

No-one said it was perfect. But the film is not a candy-coloured technicolour romp so the colour doesn't bother me, and I'd rather have contrast that's at the duller end of the scale instead of detail-crushing extremes. And the compression artefacts aren't particularly problematic to my eyes.

Your eyes cant see compression in 2008 but mine see that nasty compression even from long viewing distance. UHE is DNR mess, but 2008 is blocky and dull mess also. I think predator deserves proper release, its one of the best action films, but none of these releases are acceptable to my eyes. I have seen "Driver", "terminator 1", "aliens 1/2", these films looks like new, and this is how Predator 1 should look like.

But there isn't any other version. The 2008 release is the best of two evils.

Sure, I'm not saying that the '08 version is how I want Predator to look in general, but Tech hit the nail on the head: it's the lesser of two weevils.

Unfortunately they don't post worldwide so Amazon UK seems to be the cheapest at approximately AUD$30 (including postage) for Australians. I'm not sure if this is getting a release downunder, it has been pulled from pre-ordering at some shops.

That release is for a UK import. There's another for 17 dollars which I assume in the 3D version. There's no cover. Honestly I'm starting to wonder if this is even getting a US release right now.

Quick points on my impression.

* The transfer looks the same as 'The Ultimate Hunter Edition'

* No visible 3D errors! Really surprised by this. Of course there were some obvious auto fill in but nothing really bad that would irritate me like i Robot.

* Very conservative 3D with mild to little shaping. The last two conversions from Fox using this method had virtually no shaping so what little there is here is ok at best. There still was a lot of flat paperish layers so don't expect a big improvement there.


Overall based on those 2mins I would buy it. Sure the 3D isn't anything special but it will be ok (ok at best) on a 100" size screen.

I didn't see the preview 3D yet, so thank you for the mini review. I don't own this on video yet, so this could be the version to get for the 3D at 14.99 best buy. Hopefully Australia will offer it soon.
