A Blu-ray is in the works.
I can't wait to own this.

If Criterion does it down the road, I'd certainly love that.

Up to $ 44 million worldwide. Not bad for an opening weekend for a 3 1/2 hour, R-rated, dark movie for grown-ups. Overseas, it beat Taylor at the box office.

I did! I wanted to give you my thoughts when I got home, but then dealing with a sick cat. Then helping out on a quick little film short. I got busy. Let’s hope I can remember all the bits and bobs of what I enjoyed.

[Show spoiler]So surprise surprise I loved it! It was still meditative Scorsese facing his own mortality of Silence, The Irishman, and the third act of Wolf of Wall Street.

Everyone was right, that score kicks in and doesn’t let up! I wouldn’t be surprised if Robbie Robertson was like “that’s the best I could do, I’m out!” That joke is said with all respect. Love him! With the music being great, the use of silence was also really heartbreaking. Like the sound going out when Molly’s mom died, broke my heart.

The first moment that caught me off guard in the best way. Was the silent movie style prologue of the wealth and the Osage community. I thought that was a really great storytelling move and something that shows Scorsese still has surprises up his sleeve. Then to jump forward. It is bookended with the radio drama. As a way to wrap everything up. But I also thought of a way to really show the nonsense and criticize the forced “Native American voice”. You hear none of the characters do the stereotypical accent then you hear Jack White doing it to protest the characters. I thought that was a really interesting move to show how their stories are told and presented through “white eyes and voice”.

Another little detail that I really liked was the introduction of Hale giving Ernest a book on the history of the Osage and letting that give some details about the Osage, how they got the oil and other details from the book. So many standout performances, but I was really impressed with Leo. I’m not always his biggest fan but the way he played child and child trying to act tough but knowing he has to do whatever Hale tells him, was fantastic. De Niro was on fire. This has to be one of my favorite performances of his. Just watching his eyes and how he studied and was looking to manipulate Ernest was fantastic. Scott Shepherd gave a really underrated performance. I think his mix of menace and glee was really well done. Jason Isbell surprised me in one of his first acting roles. Where’d that come from. William Belleau was another great quick little performance. But one character that every time he popped up made me happy, was Tommy Schultz as Blackie. Loved him! I would love a spin-off of him. Ty Mitchell as John Ramsey gave another little heartbreaking performance. I thought everyone did great even with the smallest roles. Yes, as shown above, I even liked Brendan Fraser’s performance. But of course, the best for last. Lily Gladstone as Mollie was absolutely fantastic. This is what it means to act with your eyes. She did so much with a look, it was masterful! If you haven’t seen Certain Women, that was the introduction of her being able to do so much with silence.

The visuals were outstanding. I think this and Barbie alone should show that Rodrigo Prieto needs to be in conversation for best working cinematographer. The scene with the fire and he let it go out of focus and the first turned into an oil painting was amazing. The scene in the Mason Lodge was another standout scene. I had a feeling from the trailer that I would love the framing of it, and I did! The use of cranes was great. One little side note that made me happy. I noticed some shots were out of focus. After finishing my first movie as a focus puller I was feeling a little worried about some of the shots I missed. But if big and professional movies can have a shot or two out of focus, then I’m fine!

Marty’s cameo is one of my favorite cameos of his. This and The Irishman definitely feel like a mood piece.8 can see myself wanting to put this or Irishman on and letting them was over me. But yeah. The short of it, I loved it, it hit and exceeded my expectations!

I also saw a statistic, which made me happy. Was 44% of the audience was under 30. I know a lot of people on these forums write off younger audiences and think they “don’t understand cinema”, or some other nonsense. But it fills me with joy that people a few years younger than me are seeking out movies, longer movies and especially longer drama movies.

Overall this film was very good, Leo is very convincing playing a gullible person, De Niro fits into a Scorsese film like a glove, the performances are quite good across the board, the direction and cinematography is expectedly top notch, and it's pretty engaging for about 75% of its runtime. However, it definitely starts to drag in the latter section. I feel like they could've trimmed it to around 2h 45min for theaters and saved this 3h 25min version for a home video director's cut. The ending is also a bit odd, it's like they suddenly realized the runtime maxed out and had to rush through the final points. Still, a solid 4/5 stars.

As for trailers, I got Silent Night, Ferrari, The Marvels, Aquaman, Argylle, and Bob Marley. The irony of playing 2 superhero trailers back-to-back before a Scorsese movie.

You'd almost think we movie enthusiasts would know better based on the very throwaway lines dropped in movies for the past century. Every generation loves to write off the next one. Ironic. It's a lot more fun to accept others and spread joy anyway.

I, for one, love it when I see younger people appreciating these kinds of films. Also, I love it when younger people start making these kinds of films for themselves.

It's never an old vs young thing. That's something that both young and older people often have to be reminded of. There are some really cool older people guys, and there are some really jerky ones. Same exact thing applies to younger people. It's never one or the other is 'ruining everything'.

Saw this today and liked it quite a bit though not as much as The Irishman. Definitely has that same feel of a late period work by a master filmmaker. The radio play epilogue was wonderful.

Anybody else get a Billy Bob Thornton in Sling Blade vibe from Leo's vocal performance?

That scene was very jarring, not only did it introduce Fraser late in the movie in an excited state, but it was quickly followed by Lithgow's first appearance. (neither actor I knew was going to be in this film). If this was Oppenheimer it'd be par for the course the way that film had so many actors popping in and out throughout, here it was quite a surprise for me.

Younger audiences have a strong enough bladder to endure a movie of this length.

LOL, well I'm quite old, but I never moved once.

Now, sleeping through the night without getting up repeatedly, now that's a whole other thing....

Funny enough I had to rush to the bathroom(accidentally drank too much water close to the showtime) but the dude who was at least twice my age sat through just fine.

Will this follow in the same footsteps as netflix irishman, and make it to apple tv plus in less than a month after its theatrical release? After all,its current box office, is less than half of what oppenheimer did in its opening weekend.

I'd be very surprised if its on Apple TV before the Oscar nominations. This is a proper theatrical release - Paramount is releasing in theaters since Apple doesn't have that theatrical distribution infrastructure.

Oppenheimer had a lot of help from that pink girl.

why the suprise. it is guaranteed to be on disc. Killers is produced by Apple but is not a streaming release. This is a regular theatrical movie.

Because it's primarily touted as an Apple Original Film, is advertised on their streaming service all the time, and in the past few years there have been plenty of movies NOT produced by streaming platforms that were released in theaters and never got bluray or even DVD releases, so I remain skeptical until I see an official or very reliable source
