I only have the King Kong Blu-ray, but based on screencaps alone, the HDR looks like it's been dialed up to 11 out of 10 and additionally has many instances of DNR. It's hideous. You can use that 4K disc as a coaster unfortunately. The good thing is these kinds of presentations are rare.

Ya it was really bad. And not in a dim dark disappointing way like POTC, but an in your face blown out dnr'd mess that really took me out of the film. I meant to throw in the standard blu after just to compare, so maybe I'll have to do that tonight.

The compression gets a bit shit on the BD, it's got an average of a mere 16 Mb/s and it shows. The UHD is utterly bizarre (PJ should be barred from touching his own movies, and anyone else's, ever again) and yet I'd still take it over the BD.

I'll have to check it out. I did find the UHD finished off well enough for the final ~20 minutes, and the first while blended in enough to be a bit like a period piece even if it was burning my eyes out, but the scenes on the island were often distracting.

I worry about any future UHDs that Jackson works on. I haven't watched the Blu for this one in ages (and watched the UHD once), but the 4K goes so overboard that it is difficult for me to get through. The wildness of the HDR reminds me a little of what's going on with the new Friday the 13th 4K. Though that one primarily goes to extremes of super bright highlights and ultra dark shadows, both that and this have HDR that's hyper exaggerated.

Watching the UHD in full once was enough for me. Parted ways with it. If for whatever some unforseen reason in the future I want to own it again I'll pick up the BD.

How can this be? It's the ultimate edition.

I recently did some comparisons between UHD and BD and I gotta say I find the former unwatchable now. The EXTREMELY! HOT! HDR grade can be fixed on Panny, but the awful color grading (what happened with all those pleasant greens of the jungle from the BD?) and an awful postprocessing they used - not.

Look at the beginning of the second chapter. It looks lovely with that warm light. UHD? It's overly bright and so f*cking ORANGE that my eyes hurt. They overprocessed the image to the point of actors' faces looking extremely off and almost plastic, with weirdly exaggerated details.

You don’t have to remind me, I been complaining about Naomi Watts’ egg-shaped DNR’ed forehead for years. There’s so much that’s distractingly awful about the UHD but at the same time the Blu is so badly encoded that it becomes a toss-up as to what shit I can tolerate more. And the UHD still wins.

From my viewing distance the poor encode on the BD is not a problem. Unfortunately the UHD looks awful even from the orbit

One can only imagine how stellar the UHD would have been if they left the DI intact!

I watched about the first half of this movie not long ago. It got late, I went to bed, and never picked it back up.

There are moments of it where it looks pretty decent (or let's say at least 'okay'), but so many moments of such a harsh processed look that causes me nausea.

Yes, it's very bright, but I have no issues DTM'ing this mo-fo into a pleasing enough APL. When I was using ancient static mapping curves a long time back, the disc was unwatchable (crazy bright and blown out) unless I created a separate gamma curve just for it.

I haven't revisited the BD in ages, but I have almost no doubt the compression issues would make me prefer the UHD BD especially on a large screen.

I sincerely hope the Studios don't involve Peter Digital Jackson in any stage of the remastering / grading process.

I personally prefer visual quality over audio if I can't have it both ways, but what do you all think about the UHD's DTS:X track? Is that a reason for you to pop in the UHD over the BD?

So this isn't worth upgrading over the Blu even at 5.99?

I would say it is, especially if you only have the one disc Blu-ray. The hours upon hours of documentaries included with this release alone justify the $5.99 price.

No, I have the Blu ray Ultimate Edition with the slip. I think it is 3 discs.

I see. It’s just up to you then. The 4K has a nuclear HDR grade and weird color palette changes that have turned off a lot of people, but the encode is better than the Blu-ray. I like the UHD personally but I understand why some don’t.
