With these tweaks, the picture is a bit
watchable: 1. Brightness 50 2. Tone Mapping - Off - with Gradation Preferred, I highlights looked clipped which is odd but it's clear this one is nuclear despite being under 1000 nits. It's funny that that even with Backlight at 0 and contrast at 30, it is still brighter than Reservoir Dogs lol and still has that pastel look. All Universal had to do was dial down the grading and keep their hands off the DNR button. I truly hope some independent Studio picks this one and does justice. This is the brightest eye sore of a disc I own. I just couldn't handle the bright waxy business by the time we get to the Island chases. The closeups on all the faces are beyond brutal to look at.
So ya I'm going to pop the Blu Ray in tonight and finish off this slog of a 3 hour movie which had so much more potential. I'm not looking forward to the time Kong is shipped back to New York dragged on like crazy either. |

Watching with my son. Put the 4K disc at first and within 15 minutes, my son said the picture doesn't look right which was quite surprising considering his age. Then put the BD and he said that looks so much better.
Despite the low bit rate VC1 and some noise, the BD offers a more natural look and the Sony XR doing a great job with upscaling even without reality creation turned on. The lossless audio on the disc really stands out over the iTunes/ MA DD+ Where the BD falls short are the dark scenes in Skull Island and the fire from gun shots looking clipped thanks to SDR Last edited by lgans316; 11-19-2022 at 05:37 PM. |

Just watched it- as I always do for Thanksgiving week. This is my first time looking at it on my new and better 4k set. it was pretty unforgiving. The HDR is great. Some shots look great. Some shots look like they were given to somebody's brother who just got hired and needed to prove himself so he decided to to do it by smearing Naomi Watts' face to hell and back in a couple of shots and then left a bunch alone while he slept off a drunk.
What's consistent is that this movie gets better and better with age and deserves the world. Suckas who say it's too long are suckas. |
