I believe you're right, in that the particular 5.1 included with 4K77 isn't "modern" per-se... I think I wheeled off into a tirade against modern sound-mixes in general, and didn't mean to bad-mouth the excellent 5.1 that's offered with 4K77.

The brief melodic throwbacks to the original trilogy soundtrack don't make sense if you watch them in chronological order. They come off as more random then. Whereas in the original trilogy you hear the whole piece.

The prequel trilogy story and ideas also build on the original trilogy, not the other way around. As do the special effects. So I'd always tell a newbie to watch them in order of release.

I never watch all six together, though. I remember them all so well, and they are stylistically so different from each other, that it probably wouldn't make much difference if I watched the trilogies days apart or years apart.

I much prefer the voice actor in the mono mix at the end (The rebel base will be in range...) his deep voice was more ominous and made the scene far more intense than the higher pitched actor in the stereo mix.

Which one is recommended , the silver screen edition or the 4k77 version , I only found one seller on eBay. They had different versions. I got the despecialized edition several years. Would like to find something as close to possible in 4k but also with out the Lucas changes.

So, just to recap:

Video presentations, mediocre to godawful for the first 5 films but the best they've ever looked, with the sequel trilogy (but TLJ benefits from DV), the spin-offs, and ROTS looking exceptional.

Audio presentations. Immersive but too low.

Extras. Has plenty but keep your DVDs and BDs.

Did I miss anything?

(And now people are talking about 4K77 version 2.0, so I might have gotten this version for nothing.) I'm sure it will be good in surround sound, though, considering the prequels at times sounded spectacular when I watched them last month. That speeder chase!
I just quickly googled matrix decoding as I had no idea what it was. Am I to understand that it means taking several audio channels that were encoded into one or two channels and then decoding them back to their original number of channels? What is the point of doing this? And according to Wikipedia: “Matrix encoding does not allow one to encode several channels in fewer channels without losing information...” So you’re losing quality when you decode a surround mix?

My preferred viewing order is

Rogue One
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
The Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith
Return of the Jedi
The Force Awakens
The Last Jedi
The Rise of Skywalker

Chronological works fine too. I skip Solo either way. If I feel like watching it I’ll just find it on Disney+ and watch it as it’s own thing.

I don't watch them in any particular order, I'll just put on which ever one I'm in the mood to watch at that moment.

As much as I love these movies I don’t revisit them all that often. I literally wore out tapes watching them on repeat, could quote them from start to finish, but due to that episodic nature I can’t just dip in and out, I gotta watch the whole lot and as there’s so much stuff in my unwatched pile already then I just don’t have the time. Same goes for LOTR, it’d been years since I’d seen them before watching the UHDs.

I've kind of gotten that way over the years, but if the kids want to watch them I'm all for it. I typically do movie night outdoors with my 96" screen and projector every Saturday night and we started the Marvel films a month or so ago. We're up for Thor this weekend. Maybe we'll do the Star Wars films next.

I know it’s not May the 4th anymore, but since everyone is sharing their first experiences with Star Wars, I thought I’d share mine as well.

Basically, when I was a kid in the 90’s I was aware that Star Wars existed even before I watched any film, since it was so prominent and referenced in popular shows and cartoons of the time — I even remember very vividly watching an Animaniacs episode which was a pretty fun Star Wars spoof. I remember knowing who Luke Skywalker was, and one couldn’t help but be fascinated by Darth Vader’s iconic design, before I even knew what his name was — which also applies to R2-D2 and C-3PO.

The first Star Wars film I watched properly was Episode I in 1999 when I was six years old, when one of my uncles took me to see it at a movie theater. I can’t say I understood everything that was going on, but I loved that film and was in awe with its imagery: the pod race, the lightsaber fights, Darth Maul and his double-bladed lightsaber, you name it —even Jar Jar to some extent—. At that young age you can also imagine that I really related to Anakin, and remember feeling sad when I saw Qui-Gon being stabbed — I think that may even be the first time I saw a good guy die on screen.

For AOTC I remember watching bits and pieces on TV, but never in full, although I did watch the Clone Wars cartoon that came out before ROTS. When ROTS finally came out, I remember the hype around it, but no one took me to the movie theater that time, so I had to watch a pirated version and really loved that movie despite the bad quality. I watched the whole saga proper sometime later, when a friend from school provided me with pirated copies of the first six movies, and naturally I watched them in chronological order because I didn’t know any better at the time , but that was my first time actually watching the OT (the Special Editions). I remember enjoying ANH even when it wasn’t what I expected originally, but I fell in love with Empire right away. ROTJ less so, but still very enjoyable. Today I can say I live and breathe Star Wars, and love all the films in the saga.

So basically I grew up watching the prequels and the Special Editions being completely unaware of the hatred they were constantly getting online, and I simply assumed everyone loved them — after all, this is Star Wars we’re talking about, for crying out loud! —, so imagine my surprise when I realized how maligned they were. Not that this changed my opinions of the films necessarily, but reading some of that stuff really hurt at the time. People now hate the sequels, which drove me to the conclusion that no one hates Star Wars more than Star Wars fans, and how futile it is trying to conform one’s opinion with that of the fandom. Just love what you love, discuss your opinions in a civil manner, but never let anyone telling you that your love for something is wrong get to you.

Anyway, the 2011 “The Complete Saga” Blu-ray set was the first Star Wars release I ever owned, and I still love that packaging to this day. I also own the UHD “The Skywalker Saga” box, and plan on getting the individual UHD releases later this year, quite possibly around Black Friday when the price is right.

May the Fourth be with you!

(By the way, isn’t it kind of nice to talk about Star Wars without arguing and trying to beat each other to death with our opinions? )

Through matrix decoding...has been a while and would have to check which one, but perhaps Dolby Surround.

It means preserving the original two track audio that played theatrically in matrixed surround. I say theatrically, but there were a lot of television shows and even some video games like that too. If you're asking why they don't separate them all so that the user doesn't have to change their settings, I really don't know.
