By process of elimination it’s easy to guess. But if someone never saw the prequels and didn’t know Hayden Christiansen was young Anakin, seeing that young ghost would be extremely awkward.

Not really. It's more easy to understand than people think. It's only jarring for those of us that grew up with the original version because we have something else to compare it to. The person who appears at the end has always been Anakin as he was as Jedi, regardless of the actor. That's the whole point of the movie and the cause the protagonist is fighting for.

I get what you’re saying, and I agree most people are going to know it’s Anakin. My point is that even if you know who it is, back in 1983 in the theater you’d probably wonder why they chose to use a young actor instead of the old guy we just saw three minutes ago.

I know where you're coming from, I guess there is invariably a surprise at how young he looks, but it goes back to my point that it's jarring to those of us who have something to compare it to. The old guy we saw three minutes ago was a scarred and deformed cyborg that was never representative of Anakin the Jedi. People who watch it for the first time with no baggage have no expectations one way or the other. The fact that now it's a young actor actually reinforces the original point: that the person that was thought to be gone has always been there and is now saved. In that sense the message might be more intuitive to new audiences.

I’d be curious to hear from people who saw the ‘04 editions of the OT before seeing the prequels and what they thought of the ending. I might do some digging online to see if I can find any posts/articles from such people.

I'm more curious about people talking about (I believe) 2 different versions of a New Hope on 4k. If that's the case, I'd like to know more and get the better cut if the one I have is inferior.

What? No. It’s the different versions of a fan restorations of the movie (called 4K77) that we're referencing in some previous posts.

Ah okay, figured that might be the case. Wanted to be sure since the OT are still 3 of my favourite films of all-time. Thanks Geoff.

If we’re talking anecdotes of the Hayden ghost, I have seen people get confused at the end— one of them was my mom a while back, although she had even seen the prequels once and must have just forgot, lol. But I have seen others react to the end and say “who is that?” if they haven’t seen the movies before. Even if you figure it out, I don’t really think that’s the reaction you want in the moment, and again it ties in with the idea that Lucas wanted future generations to watch them in Episode order and that’s why he did that.

I guess you could argue that people will get it, and then as they go back and watch the prequels they’ll notice Anakin resembling the ghost they saw in the third movie, but IMO the original Sebastian Shaw ghost works better dramatically without the context of the prequels.

Well, the best thing about Shaw is he actually smiles like someone who is ecstatic that has defeated the Empire, Palpatine, and the darkside while saving his son. Christensen looks like he's about to find your dog and throw it off a cliffside. If I was Lucas I would have said, "Cut! Hayden, wtf are you doing?"

I still remember when my brother and I first watched the Hayden Christensen version of Return of the Jedi on television, not long after Episode III came out. We knew nothing about it and found it so surprising and funny. I think it was around that time that I decided I could never watch the Special Editions again. The ongoing alterations just became too much.

As bad as that one is, Vader saying "No. Nooooooooooo!" on board the Death Star is far worse IMHO.

That really is the worst, destroying the emotion of that pivotal moment. But god help me, I've actually managed to get used to it, after many many years of wincing. By contrast, the one thing I cannot get used to is the "Jedi Rocks" sequence in Jabba's palace. I believe it's literally unwatchable, and is almost certainly my least favorite "filmed narrative content" of all time, lol. I use "chapter skip" as soon as Jabba says "play that one again", and I jump to the explosion in the corridor and the arrival of Chewie and Leia/Bousch. The edit actually works pretty well.

The Nooooo-llercoaster is the worst of the prequels, and that's saying something. I heard it infected the OT, which is hilarious, but luckily me and my kids only watch Despecialized

It's funny, I've never owned the original films past DVD, so I often forget about the further alterations applied to the Blu-rays/UHDs. Somebody recently reminded me of the Maclunkey thing and I was like ???????

The Mandalorian.

Dont care about any others
I love the purity of this. There's a very young girl I work with i noticed watching the Mandalorian on her Ipad. Never seen any of the movies, no interest whatsoever, but loves The Mandalorian. I think it's amazing that there's a little bit of Star Wars for everyone.

This is why I haven't upgraded my copy of the movie from the DVD.

Shaw looks like a pleasant grandpa happy to be there. Hayden be like, “I have to return some video tapes.”
