Theaters will be rendered obsolete. That's actually kind of sad because there is something to be said for the community viewing of films together. Of course the ticket, and especially concession prices, make it a rather choosy experience for me now. It has to be a truly special or otherwise just big film to get me to pay the price. I don't even buy concessions hardly anymore except for a drink.
I don't think we'll ever lose every theatre. But there's going to be a lot fewer theatres because people are going to the movies far less. But this has been going on for a long time. As I've posted many times before, the peak year for movie attendance in the U.S. was 1946. In NYC, which was considered the primary "movie town" for decades, we've lost 29.5% of the theatres and 16.35% of the screens since 2001.

Unfortunately, if we lose the movie theatre as the primary economic engine of the movie industry, you're going to quickly see movie budgets drop like a stone. The theatrical release provides the marketing for all subsequent revenue streams. Films that aren't released to theaters are not considered important or worthy by the public and do far less when released to VOD, streaming, DVD, BD, etc. Just pick your favorite streaming service and look at all the crap on there that you've never heard of and don't care to watch.

Now if that happens, there could be an upside: we'll get smaller, more intimate films about real life, like the independent filmmakers made during the late 1960s and 70s. But we won't see $200 million movies anymore unless the international audience can make up the revenue, especially China. And if that happens, only movies that appeal to those audiences are going to get made (which is actually happening already, thus all the action comic book movies).

As far as movie snacks go, movie theatres are concession stands that happen to show movies. In the opening weeks of a film, most theatres get only 5% of the ticket price and these days, there are only opening weeks to most films, because most films have their revenue drop to almost nothing after the 2nd weekend. It's not like the days when Star Wars would play for a year.

So while I don't think anyone should be forced to buy expensive junk food and it's always amused me that people can't sit for 2+ hours without eating, but if "we" don't buy the food/drink at our local movie theatre, it probably can't survive. So if we choose not to patronize, don't complain when it disappears.

Kylo Ren, Finn, Rey, BB-88, Chewbacca. Nothing much to speculate, we already know these characters.

That most certainly is not Kylo Ren.

From the rumors, he will eventually wear the Darth Vader mask.

That's awful, and hopefully not the case. Pathetic if true. It sure would be nice for them to establish a new villain who is different in every respect instead of rehashing and drudging up the features of an old one (who, arguably, has no match).

Tragically, I think Ren's current mask looks too similar to Vader's mask already. So disappointing.

It's not rehashing within the context of the character. From the leaked plot info, Kylo is obsessed with Sith Relics and collects them. His lightsaber is one of them. From the concept art, Kylo finds Vader's burnt helmet as well. If he admires Vader it makes sense that he would fashion himself after him.

Kylo apparently has more than a few relics.

The leaked info talked about Max von Sydow's character though, not Kylo Ren.

Ok, once we've gotten to the point in the thread where information trickles out and everybody starts overanalyzing every prop/costume photo and making snap judgements about the film without really knowing anything or the context, I'm out. Plus I want to avoid all spoilers from this point on. PEACE OUT!!

No judgements here, just excited about the film. I'm 37 years old, I love artistic films now more than action blockbusters, but this is the only franchise that makes me feel like a kid again. I'm gonna have fun and dig everything about it. I'm in the dark side, and enjoying it!
