Of course, I'm more over-protective of my discs than most (or so I thought, until I joined this forum).

There does appear to be a genuine issue with Summer Hours, but I do not own that Blu-ray, and I cannot comment. I haven't experienced anything wrong with my copies of Walkabout, M, or Stagecoach, though.
I've gone back and checked all of the "suspect" titles in my collection also. There is absolutely no problem. I don't know if these occurances some people are reporting are due to some kind of extremely bad storage situation, or what. I own tons of CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs and have yet to have any of them "go bad". I have received new discs with problems and exchanged them, but no discs have changed over time.

Well you are lucky, i am 100% sure that when i first got Summer Hours and Stagecoach they played fine, i even watched all the special features of Stagecoach, and now they have issues, and the only thing they have in common is that there is a slight brown coloration on the edge of the disc, very similar that with the Walkabout disc that had issues from the start.

Now i can't be sure that the browning thing weren't there from the beginning but still seems suspicious.

Also these issues seem to be isolated to releases until before Criterion announced the playback issues on Walkabout around June 2010. I have many discs from that time without issues but i am not sure they are from the first pressing since i started purchasing them in 2012.

It's funny you should mention that. I'm a big fan of the French New Wave as well, but I've always had a harder time, in general, connecting with Truffaut's films than the others.

As for Jules et Jim specifically, I liked it ok. But I haven't re-watched it years, so ...

I was ready to love that film after only watching 400 blows and The Last Metro from Truffaut, 400 blows is one of my favorites but was one of the first new wave i saw and took me a second viewing to really appreciate it, and I wasn't all that impressed with The Last Metro.

Now on Jules and Jim, i first saw the 3 reasons promo and decided to blind buy it, at first when watching the movie i wasn't entirely convinced i made the right decision, i felt everything happened too fast and at times didn't even gave time enough to read all the subtitles so i felt like missing the visuals, but then suddenly in the second part of the film i started to warm to it, and found some great scenes like the one on my avatar . or the guitar scene, while i didn't sympathize with Catherine i feel the film does a good job of expressing her character in a very human way.

Also i think this is the type of film that kept me thinking about it for days and after watching all the special features it suddenly felt in my mind like one of my favorites so i really would like to see it again soon.

Same here. I've never had a problem with a CC disc.

Watched Paris, Texas for the first time...Loved it. When I started playing it on a lazy Sunday afternoon, my wife was surfing internet...but it grabbed her and 2.5 hours passed by quickly...

I think these two posts encapsulate pretty well, how many feel about this film. I still haven't given it a rewatch, but I am very much looking fwd to doing that as, like Pedro, it feels like a favorite of mine in my mind despite the fact that the only time I saw it, I came on here (this site) and dumped on it.

I should have learned by now that when I walk away saying, "I hated such and such film because x character was an insufferable b**ch" (or something like that,) it usually means that the actor/actress absolutely killed it and that the movie is worth more than my original assessment.

I really wish Criterion would release the rest of Bergman's important films. It seems that the Faith Trilogy is on everyone's wish-list.
I'd also love Cries and Whispers, Scenes From a Marriage, The Virgin Spring and Hour of the Wolf.

Interestingly enough, I found The Magnificent Seven Collection today at Target for $14.99, and pulled the trigger. It's never occurred to me to check out the sequels, but the price was right for the whole set, and the sequels all seem to have strong cast lineups as well. I'm looking forward to seeing how the original movie stacks up to Seven Samurai.

On a side note, I also found the 25th Anniversary Blu-ray of Big, the 1988 Tom Hanks movie, for $10, and I picked that one up, since I finally saw it at my price point. This movie cracked me up when I saw it at the theater with friends during high school, and it's the sort of movie that compels me to stop what I'm doing whenever I've stumbled across it on television over the decades. It's a sappy movie, but I love it. I'll probably revisit this one tonight.

Anyone having trouble playing newer Criterion titles on older machines? I have many older Criterion titles that load/play just find on my Panasonic DMP-BD60 player, but more recent titles simply will not load. These include ERASERHEAD ...PERSONA ...SECONDS ... to name a few. Oddly, older Criterion titles will load, such as SHALLOW GRAVE, HOUSE, ROSEMARY'S BABY, DAZED AND CONFUSED, VIDEODROME, etc.

Could the newer titles be manufactured differently? New titles from other manufacturers do not present the same problem. My firmware is up to date, so I don't see how that could be causing the issue.

Anyone buying La Dolce Vita day 1? Its release (Oct. 21) is awfully close to when the BN Sale will likely start.

La Dolce I can wait on. The Tati box is the struggle for me. I can get day one for $100, or wait a week and save $40.

Yes. My anticipation is high enough to spend the extra $10 and have it a couple weeks earlier than the B&N sale.

Same here. I may have to bite the bullet and pay more for it. As with La Dolce Vita my anticipation is too high to wait.

Not on Day One, but I'll be picking it up as soon as the 50% off sale starts.

The Vanishing is probably the only Day One for me, and I might even wait until the sale for that one.

I will not be able to wait so definitely!

The fact that my Barnes 'N Noble is over an hour away always turns me off from partaking in the sale, although I do have a $50 gift card that I've been saving. Maybe I'll just end up purchasing some film books online from them.

Doesn't the BN sale usually begin on Monday or Tuesday. That would mean November 3rd or 4th.

An early review of the Hiroshima mon amour print which will be screening in October:

It wasn't until a repertory screening of Alain Resnais' debut masterpiece "Hiroshima Mon Amour," by far the most impressive digital restoration I've ever seen, that I realized what exactly I had been looking at.

using the word "masterpiece" to describe Hiroshima mon amour indicates to me that the author of this article is not averse to a little hyperbole, so I'd take his (her?) word with a grain of salt.
