This does seem like a pretty good example of why increasing the number of store fronts you can watch your movies at does not necessarily improve the safety of your digital library. All it really takes is a rights holder pulling his permission and poof a portion of your collections gone.

I have seen changes in one service propagate throughout movies anywhere to affect the other providers and support for these providers is almost none existent.
All kinds of wrong but I have been saying this for years. Collecting ends with disc. You might as well just rent or get a subscription with digital. I would be fuming if my Alien boxset or Twin Peaks boxset was wiped. It seems it is a genuine concern with digital. On what planet is it acceptable that you buy something only for it to be taken away from you. Having said that, if people are daft enough to collect digital instead of disc when the quality is of a worse standard and the likes of This can happen, maybe they deserve it. That’s just my opinion.

Totally agree with you there. This has surely got to be the best advert yet for physical media.

This is exactly why I don't buy movies or TV shows digitally. At best I may redeem digital copies that come with discs to use when it is convenient, with me viewing those as nice little bonus options for however long they may last.

While I do care about Video and Audio quality and will opt for Blu-Ray and 4K combo packs over a regular DVD, control over and access to the copies that I buy is the more important issue. This is why if forced to choose between buying either a DVD of a movie or a 4K digital download/stream (with no other physical options in this hypothetical scenario), I would go with the DVD without hesitation.

And, as was discussed briefly earlier in the thread, having recently discovered how nicely my 4K player upscales DVDs, while it is of course not the full quality of a Blu-Ray or 4K disc, it did a pretty impressive job overall, making artificats (that were noticeable when using my previous regular Blu-ray player) difficult to see, and making it easy to forget that I was even watching a DVD.

The the same movie in this hypothetical scenario were to end up on Netflix or through one of my cable channels at a higher quality and I were in the mood to watch it, then of course I would opt for that while available. But if the movie isn't available through any of those services, then I would stick with the DVD.

I agree with all your points too. I was also impressed with how my DVD's looked when played back on my 4K Sony player. Take the Alien box set for example, even though I bought all the films on Blu-ray as well, I still have the 'Quadrilogy' DVD set due to all the extra features it has, and the films themselves looked really good when played back, I found.

Just as well really, seeing as quite a number of DVD titles I own haven't yet received a Blu-ray release.

This story is doing the rounds in the digital threads. The usual crowd are very very quiet today.

This report of disappearing movies will likely enliven this thread and as it should. While this occurrence might be a rare one, even one such occurrence is entirely unacceptable. It clearly demonstrates that this can happen with digital purchases and that it has, in fact, happened.

As much as I prefer discs and as much as I sing their praises, I am not happy to see anyone lose something for which they have paid their money. A purchase should constitute a type of ownership and they should not be subject to such an arbitrary removal. I'm not saying that any purchase should come with a lifetime guarantee, but no one should be able to just remove titles from a person's collection. It would be much more honest if these digital purchases were instead defined as simply leases of a certain duration.

If a person wants to spend considerable sums of money with any digital content provider, they should at the very least read the terms of service/ EULA. At least then an informed decision can be made.

I wonder what titles were removed? were they "movies anywhere"? Need to check to see if they were removed from other store fronts as well

I'm glad that you cared enough to at least entertain us with your gif selection. You, and The Donster, are both masters of gif self-expression.

Only the best for the gifable I guess I find it funny that every so often we get these “reports” that movies are missing from people’s digital libraries. This started about the time Movies Anywhere became the main hub. Although it is possible it was happening before that with other streaming providers too. I honestly don’t know because every movie I’ve redeemed is still on iTunes (128) and VUDU (121) despite not participating with Movies Anywhere (117)

Neoz, a moderator, has posted this link in another thread:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarc.../#43a17fe95f74

Forbes has now published an article about this incident. A couple of quotes that echo my beliefs:

You know how some people like to say that physical media is dead and streaming is the future? Well, Apple is doing a pretty good job right now of proving that theory well and truly wrong."

"That the only way you can be sure you own anything is if you’re physically holding it in your hand."

And this:

"I’m also starting to receive reports today of the recent return of another major issue with iTunes movies: the downgrading of 4K HDR films to HD. This started happening in 2017."

The story is growing some legs and is now appearing in major news outlets.

I watch stuff when I want so buying it is a good option. If it disappears in some future time that’s okay.
