I think I'm the only one who prefers the extended edition running @ 200 minutes. The swamp attack scene should have been left in the theatrical cut.

Well... no. I also like the extended cut which is why I made that statement, but I 100% agree with you.

The extended edition is horrible. It’s only like 12 minutes longer but adding in that extra extra action it turns the arrival on skull island into an endurance test and I hated it. Literally fell asleep and it took me a further two nights to finish it! Not PJ’s finest hour (or three).

The Middle Earth movies and this are a once a year affair for me- when I don't have to go anywhere or do anything (which is pretty much also a once or twice a year affair, feels like, but I digress) and I kinda love wallowing in the environments his movies create. In this movie's case, the longer cut isn't the better cut, but I love it all the same.

I would have cut most of the action scenes on the island even in the theatrical version. Kong looks great and should have been the main attraction on the island instead of countless dinosaur encounters. I know many find the first part too drawn out, but I love the slow buildup and the feeling of dread before they venture into the wilderness - as well as the final part of the film in NY. There's a great film hidden somewhere, but the action scenes on the island are just too long, too many and too over the top.

Yep. If there was just one big action beat on the island before meeting kong then fine, but you get one after another after another in the extended cut and it's just brutalising. You forget all about character and plot and why they're even there, it's this relentless barrage of CG creatures and I found it to be totally numbing.

I bought this movie in 4K in France, only to realize it doesn't include the 3rd disc of extras. Ha ha, thanks for the joke French Universal! I went on Amazon US to get the full package, but.... is this title already OOP? I can't find the US edition, except in second hand and at unreasonable prices. If anyone has any advice....

I see the 4k on amazon for $15, but you could buy the UE bluray for $5-7 if you just want the bonus features.

Weird, I don't see the same. Maybe because I'm from a foreign country. But I didn't think about the Blu-ray edition. Pretty obvious. Thanks!

The stampede sequence has some of the worst CGI and compositing ever. It was even awful for its time, and I'm amazed they allowed that garbage into the final cut. That entire sequence is just ridiculously over-the-top and it should have been cut way, WAY down (I'd even say lose it entirely but it's necessary for some plot points).

Nope, I prefer the extended version as well, but especially that swamp scene.

For some reason this movie has always entertained me enormously, but then again I have a much higher tolerance for lengthy films than most. My only true complaint really is somewhat superficial: I think having Kong battle multiple V-Rexes diminishes the theoretical equivalence of a V-Rex vs a Kong. Should've been one versus one.

With all due respect to those who prefer “tighter” cuts - less is not always more.

Indeed, more films have been horrifically compromised over the years in the name of “good theatrical pacing” than I could even begin to list in a single day. I’m not saying Kong 2005 is one of those (far from it) but I do notice many of same people consistently rallying against director’s cuts, extended cuts and classic roadshows on here to the point of exhaustion. The extended version of this film is the furthest thing from horrible and no more of an endurance test than the already-lengthy version screened theatrically. Maybe it’s my love of longer epics speaking here, but it’s beyond me as to how any version of this spectacle could leave even the most casual viewer feeling bored. IMO the added narrative tissue here is of great value and I’m glad PJ saw fit to reinstate it for home release.

PJ's King Kong suffers from original run Marvel villain-itis, that is a million dollar find to steal ten thousand dollars.

They left the dinosaurs behind to bring back an oversized monkey. It's like an expedition to find the World's biggest ball of yarn past a field full of unicorns.

Bring on the schlock King Kong versus all the dinos in old timey New York.

I like the Extended Edition. I'll take all the monsters a creature feature cares to throw at me. But the movie is overlong, even in the theatrical cut. I think there's probably a better compromise version in there somewhere.

If I was writing a King Kong remake, I would have rival expeditions. One brings back Kong, the other a T-rex. They both break loose for a final battle in the city!

I’m watching the disc for the first time and this is hands down the worst 4K disc I’ve personally seen. It’s everything you don’t want a film to look like.

The frustrating part is that there are a few moments that actually do look really nice with HDR and you can see that there is some underlying detail in the image but it's just so wildly inconsistent throughout

I actually like most of this movie.

I don't mind most of the action on the island, but I had huge problems with the stampede scene and the ending. Jackson didn't want to let Kong go. Kong's demise was stretched out far too long.

Better yet, the rival team with the dinosaurs intentionally sabotages Kong's restraints in order to embarrass the Kong team, thus leading to Kong's disastrous escape and rampage, and then they have to intentionally let their dinos out in order to stop Kong!
