I also happened to stop by Best Buy today and saw Red Desert on the shelves. I want it bad but resisted the urge to spend $30 plus tax.

Dude, BB is NOTORIOUS for putting out Blus early! Especially CC titles!

I saw Ride With the Devil and some other titles a few months ago on the shelves about 1-2 weeks before the actual date. I actually didn't look tonight for the ones being released within the next few weeks...I should check Sunday.

Yeah! I just ordered The Man Who Fell To Earth from Amazon on Monday as I heard it was going out of print and they notified me that they shipped it today. Was afraid I may not have gotten it.

While Night of the Lepus was made at MGM, it's now a Warner property, and it has a good DVD that has been out for ~5 years now.

I think that title is considered OOP print yet it can still be found in some bargin bins. I think I came across a copy in a local MN grocery store for 5.00! It is a great midnite movie kind of title.

Don't know if you guys are watching the World Cup, but this is worth a mention. Algeria apparently watched Pontecorvo's "The Battle of Algiers" to psych themselves up for the match against the heavy favorite England. Which resulted in a tie 0-0. Who was saying that you can't learn anything from good films?

My "The Man Who Fell To Earth" shipped today as well. I figure that whenever a CC Blu-ray goes OOP I will just go ahead and snag it while I can. I wish I did that with The Third Man.

LOL, I thought of La bataille d'Alger when I watched the match, I had no idea that they really did prepare themselves with it.
Just imagine if they'd played against France..

I did for Third Man. Are there other Criterion Blu's that went out of print?

Hey Vol...finally got a chance yesterday to watch the Movietone version of Sunrise...what an unexpected surprise, as far as how that film developed.

WONDERFUL!

I hadn't expected the comedy along with the pathos. In a lot of ways, it reminded me a lot of Chaplin films that I've seen. I've got to believe that Chaplin was influenced to some degree by Murnau.

Just about to watch the Czech version, as the wife and boys are still sleeping after a late night. I'll let you guys know which version I prefer.

Thanks to ALL you folks here for turning me on to MoC and Eureka!

Possibly... but I would be willing to bet that it was more the other way around. Chaplin had already been mixing pathos and comedy for years before Murnau ever made Sunrise.

I highly recommend listening to the commentary after you've watched the Czech version. I can't remember which commentary it is (the one on Sunrise or the David Kalat one on City Girl), but one of them discusses the comedy aspects of Sunrise and tries to end the debate as to whether the comedy touches were Murnau's doing or Hollywood's meddling. Very interesting stuff... to me, anyway.

Glad you enjoyed the film.

Make sure you also get MoC's "City Girl" and let's hope that either MoC or Kino release more Murnau on Blu-ray. Meanwhile, its good to see Criterion follow with bringing out more silents.

With the recent discovery of more silents in the last three years, let's hope that the Nitrate reels hold up and they are able to do some major restoration. We are very fortunate that many of these lost films, especially the lost footage of "Metropolis" have been found.

Thanks Knap!

You're most probably correct...I keep forgetting that Chaplin started directing for Keystone in 1914! I've read his autobiography and a couple of biographies about him...but it's been a few years. I can't wait until Criterion starts releasing his films...which should hopefully be sometime in the 3rd or 4th quarter of this year. I've got all of the MK2 DVD releases and the Mutual shorts as well on DVD.

Thanks for the heads up on the commentary! I'm almost done with the Czech version, but will balance watching BDs with watching the Mets and Yankees.

City Girl should arrive by the middle of next week...looking forward to that as well.

Tell me about it! I'm so excited for the Chaplins. I'm holding on to all of my DVDs for now (and maybe forever), since I don't know what all Criterion will release. I have the Region 2 MK2 boxset, the Chaplin Revue disc, the BFI editions of the Essanay and Mutual shorts, and the Image DVDs of The Circus and City Lights.

It will be interesting to see how Criterion presents these. The framing between the original Image releases and the MK2s has been a hot debate. The Image releases tried to present the films as close as possible to the way they were originally released while the MK2s provided us with Chaplin's most recent edited versions. Image Entertainments City Lights also included a recent (circe 1990s) re-recording of the original score, conducted by Carl Davis, which I think is a great touch. It sounds exactly like the original only with much-improved sonics. It would be great if Criterion could include both soundtracks.

I like Chaplin (and can't wait for Criterion to release some of his films on blu), and might get some heat for this, but I always perferred Keaton. He is at the top somewhere on my list of fav American directors.

I prefer Chaplin but certainly adore Keaton--so you won't be getting any flack from me.
