Ok. Thanks Tns49. I’ll keep that in mind. I’m actually most excited about cranking the sound on this one. I always loved the song selection and all the planes and vehicles sounds in this one and I’m sure it’ll all sound great.

This last week we enjoyed a run through of the Hobbits trilogy in 3D. Such gorgeous scenery and the 3D still adds to the flavor, although it was milder than I remembered.

It’s not Clash of the Titans bad, but it’s light years from say Transformers: The Last Knight good or Valerian good. From what I’ve read in the past from your posts, I would guess that you’ll think it’s fine. You appreciate even “good” 3D over the flat alternative.

It just feels bad that the 2D and 4K image is significantly better than the 3D in this case. And (I’m sure you might’ve read) the lack of an Atmos or 7.1 option on the 3D disc is a missed opportunity and another blow to 3D lovers.
The sound is very good on the 3D 5.1 disc, but the Atmos/7.1 experience is sublime in comparison.

Agreed. I’m very happy that we received a 3D release of this amazing film. I love the fact that we have multiple options to watch this at home. I’ll most likely be watching the 2D disc more because of the superior transfer & sound, but I’ll revisit the 3D on occasion.
I will be getting the Sony disc which I understand is a different master from the Warner disc

Hey everyone! First time posting on the forum.

Watched Hotel Transylvania 3D last night (first time on 3D). I bought it for 7€ here in Portugal and couldn't resist since I already own the second one.

Also, saw Valerian 3D on the weekend (missed it in cinemas) and it was pretty good, nice depth, not many POP-OUTs but the overall scenery was really awesome!

Just ordered Tai Chi Zero and Tai Chi Hero box set used for $38.62 which includes shipping. Better than ordering individually. Anybody have them?

Hi Ray,

You guys are going to make me cry some day! . Thanks for the nice words but I couldn't express such enthusiasm if I didn't feel it was shared by so many like you!

Hey, I'm also a Met fan so 3D is the only thing I have left to be positive about LOL!

I just saw Jumper 3D and Jurassic World 3D (and Blade Runner 2049 before that, although I also saw that one at the theater in 3D).

Jurassic World looked great in 3D. No complaints. Even daylight was plenty bright looking for a change (some you wish were brighter in 3D, but that's also a function of how bright your TV/projector can make the image to overcome the glasses' tinting effect) and definitely a fair bit brighter than Blade Runner, but then it never was blue skies so perhaps it was supposed to be a bit dimmer during the day to begin with. Jurassic Park had excellent sound (DTS-Master HD 7.1) as well, although I still think the Toy Story movies really wowed me with their soundtracks even more with only 6.1 EX as the dialogue matches their movement there perfectly and everything moved around in the surround space with every little object. Here I noticed the bigger objects, but perhaps I was distracted by Bryce Dallas Howard (quite the attractive red head) to notice every little detail on the first viewing (did not see it at the theater). I definitely liked this one better than Jurassic 2 & 3 and Chris Pratt did a great job and Bryce was much better looking IMO than Laura Dern, but also kind of a jerk until the end (that was the idea, I suppose). I missed Jeff Goldblum's witty character. It would have been better if they had him back for it. The somewhat trained raptors were interesting, but the danger of having flying dinosaurs that could escape the island seemed particularly hard to swallow, let alone creating hybrid monster dinosaurs. One would have thought they would have learned their lesson from the previous park. I also don't buy they would let people drive those gyro-spheres themselves, certainly not without some kind of auto-pilot override. The unbelievable elements are probably what ruined it a bit for me.

Jumper OTOH, now there was some 3D that made me think "colorforms" in several scenes (i.e. layers of "flat" 2D placed in 3D space). It wasn't like that in every scene, but it was kind of annoying when it did happen (and like some after-processed 3D, they missed some spots, like looking through the "fence" in the Roman Colosseum; flat image on it instead of seeing "through" it; windshield reflections often don't look right in older 3D processed material, etc. I'm torn on whether I liked it better in 3D overall as some scenes were pretty good in 3D. I can see why someone would prefer the 2D version here, though. I know some people hated Jumper, but I don't think it deserves some of the hate it gets; I thought it was a fun movie, although it was weird seeing Anakin Skywalker teleporting instead of using the Force and whining about Obi-Wan keeping him down....). I understand the book was quite different so perhaps that's where the hate comes from, but I can also see why a movie would need more of a traditional plot to keep it interesting.

Hey!
I have the Extended Trilogy in 3D, and its a wild ride!
I saw them all in IMAX 3D HRF, and watching it at home it still Amazed me. There are some POP-OUTs in all of them and the overall feel is amazing in 3D Depth Nothing like shooting 3D Native

Sad we don't have HFR on the Hobbit Bluray's, I really liked the 48 frames.

Although they (Hobbit Trilogy) are good and native I believe, they still aren't up to modern 3D conversion strength, so keep expectations low and you'll be very happy. If you have a tv with issues playing dark scenes then most of the first one and parts of the second will have you frustrated since the shadow detail is petty crucial to achieving the depth illusion in these. Otherwise, getting lost in middle earth is just a pleasure and you might even be a bit sad when you switch over to LOTR and its only in 2D.

I remember having no interest in the lord of the rings, but when it came to home video, the girl i was seeing at the time convinced me to watch it with her. I was glued to it and didnt want to shut it off to watch the rest the next day as it was late and she was tired. I ended up loving the trilogy. I hope I like this one as well.

watching desolation having not seen the first , i was a bit lost and at times bored, but i look forward to seeing them all in the extended versions

They are a slog to plod through the first time IMO. But they grew on me quite fast the next few times as knowing what happens later makes the more boring earlier parts more interesting. It all stems from our love of the LOTR trilogy though. In some ways I enjoy watching the Hobbit Trilogy more than the LOTR trilogy now because of the middle earth history/tour. We can watch these all once a year now. The real issue we just found out is the extended edition of the LOTR is abysmal looking after you finish the Hobbit trilogy. They messed with the colors so much that skies and skins don't look right, especially after you sit through 9 hours of it looking amazing. The fix for this is to apparently buy the theatrical version of the first LOTR movie and then everything will be as it should. It arrives on Friday so I hope to confirm that bit then.

Enjoy your journey

Bought this from Amazon and received today -

I love the fact that they used a taller AR of 2.00:1. 3D works better with more height, in my opinion.

All these movies came out in 2017 and have better 3D than The Hobbit. Don't get me wrong The hobbit looks great in 3D but there is just not as much depth as there should be. It has been a great year for 3D as far as quality.
