I finally got to watch this on Blu-ray today for the very first time, and very much enjoyed it. Add it to an ever-growing list of movies that bombed at the box office, which I really like.
It's right up my alley. Fun, action-packed, romantic, great VFX, aside from some less than perfect compositing work. It checks all the boxes.
The pq is quite impressive, save for a few dark scenes, where noise creeps in, and makes for a rather cheap experience. Still a 4.25/5
There wasn't as much surround activity, as I had expected, but it was pretty good. Overall, I am very glad to have finally given this one a shot. Will definitely watch again.

I have a mixed reaction to this movie, but decided that I like it quite a bit overall. I loved the first Edgar Rice Burroughs book in this series as a teenager. But this type of story, written in 1911, does seem kind of tough to translate to the modern sensibilities that we have today. Based on what we know now scientifically.

So “The Martian” it is not… And it doesn’t have to be, I know that.

But one tiny tweak that would have helped me is to deviate just a smidge from the book and have it that the portal to Mars is also a time portal to Mars as it existed 3 billion years in the past. Or however long ago it was that Mars was losing its magnetosphere and then atmosphere, but its atmosphere was still breathable, it had liquid water, and was temperate, and supported life on the surface, etc. That would’ve helped me run with the fantasy, and to get into it more innocently.

But anyway, I like this movie. It’s in a category I have for films that are flawed in certain ways but I still really like them. Like Constantine (2005).

I didn't care for the movie but I remember liking some representations in it. Taylor Kitsch just ruins it for me. I dislike him so much that I'm sure a rewatch won't cause a re-evaluation. It could have been a decent movie if cast correctly.

Definitely, great sci-fi action adventure film! Would look great on UHD too

Just watched it again today. What a fun and enjoyable movie. Too bad they never made anymore.
