Crossing Over (DVD)
6/10 I bought this movie at a Hollywood Video going out of business. I had read about it before and was somewhat interested (mainly because Alice Eve is nekid in several scenes). It seemed like an interesting story about imigration, but I think it had too many little stories intertwined that kinda took away from the main focus of the movie. I would have given this movie a 4/10, but it got bonus points for the lovely Alice Eve. ![]() |

Play Time
Film 3/5 I am still soaking it all in, I found several parts very funny, once the story gets to the nightclub/restaurant it hits on all cylinders. But to me there was so much downtime trying to get there. However, I found myself enthralled by the set designs it truly is a one of kind viewing experience. Perhaps on a repeat viewing that score could go up. PQ 4/5 No complaints there is a ton of grey/monochrome in the movie and it looks excellent. AQ 4/5 Again very solid, there is not a whole of dialog in the movie but the sound stage comes alive during the nightclub/restaurant scene. |

watched FORCE 10 FROM NAVARONE-- a movie I really liked a lot when I was much younger--- I didn't buy it on dvd because I read it had a lousy transfer-- then I read the same thing about the blu-ray but bought it anyway when it went down to ten bucks--
so after all that... it still is a good movie, not as good as I remembered it, but the cast alone makes it very entertaining-- the late great Robert Shaw, the always good Edward Fox, a young Harrison Ford, the camp value of having Barbara Bach and Richard Kiel 2 years after making the Bond classic The Spy Who Loved Me, etc-- The PQ quality was as bad as said unfortunately, very grainy in spots, print damage, and blue lines that run down the screen in several scenes! ![]() 3.0 out of 5.0 for movie 2.0 out of 5.0 for blu-ray |

Whip It
Rating: 3 out of 5 Drew Barrymore's directorial debut tells the tale of Bliss (Page), a 17 year old stuck in the tedium of small town Texas and smothered by her mother's desire to recapture her prestige and youth. Salvation appears one day in the unlikely form of the sport of roller derby. Can she overcome her disapproving parents, the physicality of the game, and the league's most vindictive player (Lewis)? Of course she can. This is after all a feel good, pretty much paint by numbers flick. There's no great revelation about humanity or any other such heady ideas to be found here. Still, the film succeeds extremely well at what it tries to be - simply an enjoyable film. Ellen Page is hugely likeable and all the cast turn in good performances. Juliette Lewis is particularly good as the rival player and it's a shame that she's been gone from movies for so long. Barrymore's debut might not be as groundbreaking as others from Hollywood royalty (Sofia Coppola comes to mind) but it is no less entertaining. Now lace up those skates and get out there! |

The Man Who Fell To Earth
Film: 2.5/5 -not very cohesive; detached subplots -i can tell this was a classic in the 70's...i felt myself wishing they had a 90 minute "i'm not trippin" cut ![]() ![]() -bowie was good as the alien. like arnold as terminator, he was able to convey that unique demeanor of an ET despite not having a big acting resume -my main issue with the film was its lack of cohesiveness, which, for a sci-fi film that is character driven, is unusual. it didn't seem to be a image-driven sci-fi like 2001, but did hold itself out as character driven. so many questions are left unanswered that go to the heart of the plot that i felt disappointed -also: probably the first (and only) orgie-scifi i've ever seen ![]() -the only reason i didn't rate it lower was the directing was great at times: the director used zoom in/outs a lot, as well as first person viewpoint. for example, a character would enter a room, the camera would zoom in on their face (very quick), after which you'd see that persons first person view...pretty cool technique to be honest. PQ and AQ were great, as to be expected from criterion. |
