^ Yeah, I guess we'll wait and see what happens. Too, Robotech as a property isn't nearly as valuable within Japan itself as it is outside of its borders, so I'm wondering as well if the Harmony Gold-reps might have traveled all the way over there for significant business-related reasons (i.e., something related to the original SDFM TV show and DYRL movie). Maybe one or both of those two properties can finally escape from licensing-hell, here.

Here's hoping something comes out of their trip, 40th anniversary 4K remaster of DYRL anyone? Also maybe both being able to be released outside of Japan finally after all these years, one can dream, maybe it's the year of Macross

I can totally see HG demanding that if they do work out a Macross/DYRL? English release that all the Robotech names and references will have to be implemented over the literal Jp translations. It's what Shout! did with the Japanese Transformers sets where the audio that named out Convoy and Destron were still subtitled into Optimus and Decepticon.

So, what are Robotech names again? Rick Hunter, Lisa Hayes, and.... God help me I can't remember the rest.

not too hopeful on a UHD release of DYRL turning out well, especially given Bandai's spotty track record of cel-era anime on UHDs and Big West/Nue letting the old DYRL (or the new "AI-upscaled" Macross Zero) BDs slide

I'd still take the average Bandai UHD over whatever the hell Kawamori worked on for the 2012 Blu-ray, which got degraded even further in the FORS-processed 2016 Blu-ray. I hope that Kawamori has no involvement with an UHD release.

Kevin came clean last night (US time) and said that they are attending the convention for "business reasons", so I would say that HG is there for the purpose of trying to officially push more Robotech garbage merch in the Asian markets and licensing the show out to more foreign distributors in Asian markets. Sort of a "Well, you like Macross right? You're gonna loooooooooooove our Robotech adaptation and all the merch that comes with it!" Ugh.

I'm okay with it if it means more materials get released for everyone. My wife and I both discovered Robotech in the 80s and it's one of the things we bonded over (also Star Trek) and we own the DVDs of both Robotech and the Macross/Southern/Mospeada sets.

If selling both versions of the franchise worldwide means I get a nice DYRL blu-ray, then bring it on.

Damn it-I want Frontier! Wait-what am I talking about? I already have it, fan-subtitles and all. The jpbd set was a heavy lift for me but the subs were easy.

Does Robotech even have any presence in Asia?

I've heard there were plans to localize the scrapped N64 game *into* a Macross game, believe it or not.

The Filipinos got it in the late 80's, after an hilariously bad in-country dub of Macross had aired in the early 80's and Hong Kong got it in the mid-90's. Beyond that, I'm not sure what inroads HG made with the show in Asia.

CD could have definitely been localized into a Macross game, but it would have had to be reworked into a very different game, as it contains visual references to the unreleased Sentinels content that HG was still trying to push forward at the time and it has no continuity whatsoever with the established Macross TV show or DYRL, so it would need additional content created to "patch the holes" as it were.

a new UHD transfer with Bandai would involved would still mean a transfer with scanning issues, though it'd just be out of focus, but they're also willing to DNR a perfectly okay scan to death as seen with the Farewell Yamato UHD so who knows

Comparison of Macross Zero old and new BD (on page 48 and 49). Screenshots are not full resolution (except post #947), but should give some idea of what to expect.
