Japanese with subs all the way. Spirited Away is unbearable with the dub- Chihiro is so obnoxious.

Well, now I feel silly.
The only release where the openings are actually different (that I'm aware of) is the Manga Ent. Cagliostro DVD because they were lazy bastards and cut the credits down to static frames instead of the regular montage. The blu-rays all have the original I believe. Even the netflix version had the original.

Do you find Lilo obnoxious?

I was just about to mention Lilo being Chihiro. When I watched the film in school (in English), I had to explain to people why I was making Lilo and Stitch references throughout. They soon caught on.

I find the dubs for the Ghibli films to be particularly fine. Be glad we ain't getting the Devilman/Angel Cop OVA dub treatment for these films!

No references to The Ring?

Has there been any news regarding The Wind Rises? It's the only one that doesn't fit the GKIDS theme. Even Grave of the Fireflies and Lupin more or less blend in even if they don't match, but the blue and gold stick out like a sore thumb lol

I have no problem with Lilo at all in the film Lilo and Stitch. The voice fits her character well, I don’t like it in Spirited Away, because it’s not the original intent of the director (which is why I’m not a dub guy).

I'd have to agree with one reviewer that Daveigh Chase had worse direction in Spirited Away than in Lilo and Stitch - he lamented that it sounds like the former's English director just told her to scream all the time.

The dubs that I really can't handle are Mononoke & Howl's.

Billy Bob, Billy Crystal, and Christian Bale are all really out of place IMO.

I have to disagree about Billy Crystal, I thought he was pretty good. You have to remember the source material was not a Ghibli original but rather a British children's book.

If I'm being honest, I enjoyed all of the dubs Disney did.

I've never seen The Ring and considering that I usually hate those kinds of horror films, I won't anytime soon.
As for The Wind Rises, I haven't heard anything about GKIDS acquiring it, so it probably won't happen anytime soon.

I think she's fine as Chihiro, but then again I tend to prefer dubs for most anime films.
I would personally rather watch a well-done dub over subtitles any day.
Film is a visual medium after all, so I'd rather watch a movie not read it. (unless I think the dub is horrible )
Plus I have trouble reading quickly and it's annoying to have to pause the film just to know what's being said. (The text itself can also be intrusive sometimes)

All that being said, I completely understand why other people prefer to watch anime in its native language with subtitles, which is why I hate when they don't give you the option between the two.

You mean "The Birth Story of Studio Ghibli"?

The 2011 Disney Blu-ray combo-pack had it on the DVD copy, which itself was the same disc from the 2005 2-disc DVD.

EDIT:
In case you haven't seen it yet, here's a link to my Ghibli comparison chart to see what else you might want to look for.

Yep, that's the one. "The Art of Spirited Away" is also missing. Guess I'm gonna be hunting down some of the old DVDs. I wish the original DVD of Kiki's Delivery Service wasn't $300+.

Wait, what's the deal with the Kiki's Delivery Service DVD being expensive? I still have my 2003 Disney 2-disc DVD set sitting around, but those are more in the $30 range. Is there another version that's uber rare?

I only know of the one, but I've seen it floating around for $300 and more. Wait, I have seen some for around $30 now that you mention it. Guess it's not so bad, then. That said, the reason so many charge ridiculous prices is that it's the only one with the unaltered dub.

I didn't mind losing it, because I don't really care to know about the making of the English dub.

I assumed they were talking about a DVD with a Fox/Streamline dub on it.Those usually fetch higher prices.

Nope. Just the 2003 DVD with all of Hartman's lines intact and the two Sydney Forest songs. The scalpers are really something else. Actually, I don't think the Streamline dub's even been on DVD. Not surprising, really. The older anime dubs are often scorned and I still consider it a small miracle that the Streamline dub of Akira finally made its way to Blu-ray.
