Maybe because of the 4k disc buyer backlash by those who didn't realize that "Gremlins" was supposed to look grainy. The studios tend to appease the lowest common denominator, now with audio as well. |

The trend of under-lighting films in the 1970s, when Steven Spielberg and Joe Dante were first making names for themselves and Richard Donner was making Superman, became standard in the 1980s for everything except a handful of musicals, comedies, and period pieces.
The codecs available to 4K UHD are far better than anything MPEG-2 ever had to offer in handling film grain, making it unnecessary to go as far as they often do, yet they still can't outgrow these by-now outdated habits. And in theory, the audio should be better instead of worse. Good technology still won't compensate 100% for bad technique in its use. |

Spotted a copy of this (with slip) in my local Cex so thought I'd check out the thread to see if it's worth upgrading and wow, what a rollercoaster
![]() I don't think the DNR will bother me that much but some of the screens look incredibly dark, which might be a problem as I rarely get to watch movies in a darkened room. It's not usually an issue but I did struggle with the end of Dune Part One and the cave segment at the end of Cocaine Bear was hidden in darkness compared to the Blu-ray, and fiddling with the settings only resulted in washing it out. Anyway, I guess I could always return it if I'm not happy. Hoping that it's not a copy from the dodgy batch too ![]() |

So I watched it last night and thought it was fine. Yes, grain is not very noticeable or barely there a lot of the time and I did notice smoothness in some closeups of faces but overall I was happy with it. The darkness I was concerned about was never an issue despite not watching it in a darkened room. This is one case where I think have the old Blu in the package is a good thing so I can watch that 'version' if I want to.
I don't suppose we'll get another release, if they do anything for the 40th anniversary it'll likely be the same disc. Maybe for the 50th if discs are still a thing ![]() |

For anyone interested, there's a new Kickstarter up for the "Life After" series of docs. This one is covering The Goonies and they interviewed Dick before he passed.
