Nope, my PS2 never broke so I never had reason to. Taking it all apart is easy but putting it back together is not, I haven't tried it, it just looks a little more challenging.

It was a lot easier than i thought it would be honestly. as long as you keep track of all the screws, its pretty straight forward. saved $125 lol

Yeah, I'm guessing if you do it, it requires a large open space to seperate the different parts.

So no luck still? I guess your controller's problem is worse than mine.

Not sure if this is the best place to post. I am finally breaking open my PS3 slim...my second PS3 in the household.

Can I copy my account and content (downloads, etc) from my current PS3 and install it on my slim via external HD?

Or will I need to log into the new Slim with my same credentials and then redownload everything?

Thanks in advance!

^^^ That.

Are you just doing an HDD upgrade? Or are you wanting to xfer your data from an older PS3 to your new Slim?

When doing an HDD upgrade, I used an external drive to back up my old unit via USB. Then I installed the new HDD into my PS3 Slim. Finally, I used the backup utility to restore it.

If you now have 2 PS3's and you want to move content over, your best bet is to manually set up the accounts on the Slim and re-download everything from PSN. It's time-consuming, but given that a lot of it won't copy from one machine to another this is a more viable option, IMO.

If you are selling your old PS3, make sure to DEACTIVATE it. There's instructions on how to do this. It essentially unlinks that particular PS3 with your PSN account, since you can only have your account registered to 5 machines for games and 1 machine for video.

If you're keeping it, there's no need to do this.

I actually will be keeping my PS3 fatty and both will be setup in the house hold. I was just thinking I could do a complete copy (via backup utility) of my fatty content directly to my PS3 slim and be done with it. Has anyone verified that this would not work?

Thanks Sylin for the helpful info.

Gotcha.

I did that when I bought my 2nd PS3 about 18 months ago. It didn't copy a lot of the content, which I imagine was due to various copyrights and other protections in place.

I wish Sony had a utility for people with multiple PS3's that would sync the content between them--or even a mass download option. I have over 60 PSN games and a ton of game DLC, themes, etc. I know this is nerdy, but I track it all in a spreadsheet now so I can make sure all of our PS3's have the same content on them. You've never seen disappointment when your 4 year-old daughter comes crying because Daddy forgot to install her favorite Little Big Planet costumes on the bedroom PS3.

I don't think it's nerdy at all...in fact I've been known to do some similar things.

I guess I'll give it a try. I'll back up my slim and then try the transfer and see what happens. Thanks again for the input.

Not sure if this is helpful or not, but I copied all of my game saves, videos, photos from my lanuch 60Gb to an USB flash drive, and transferred almost everything to my new slim without problem. The only game save that I am unable to copy is the Resident Evil 5 save.

Have posted tis in another thread, but thought it should be here as well.

I appreciate that the report was a bit lob sided against one of the biggest consumer electronic companies on the planet.

I personally love sony, but was somewhat dissapointed when my brothers PS3 experienced YLOD.

However, as the cinsole was out of warranty and my brother does not live in mainland UK sony were asking for £145, but as the launch of the ceaper slim line was around the corner my mum agreed that for an extra £100 an new console would be more worth it as it would have a full year warranty.

Result i decided to bring the console home with me to the UK, that was the end of July, thinking, hmm i now have a spare console console, for spare parts, checking ebay every couple days for a new motherboard, but the correct motherboard for a 60gb is so rare that the cost was escalating and i was getting outbid.

Roll on to September, I watched the watchdog report with great interest, and although i agree that the failure rate of the PS3 is so low it is annoying when to happens to someone so close to you. So when i noticed they were using a 'special oven' i though to myself - its out of warranty, my brother has a new console, and i've got npthing to lose.

I set my KITCHEN oven to 110 dergess Centrigrade - sorry not sure what that is in F. and placed the motherboard to my PS3 on the middle shelf for 20 mins. That was yesterday afternoon.

Roll on this morning and after i had fed my aby girl her morning feed at 6.30am, set about rebuilding my brothers PS3............

Just as i started to watch the Liverpool vs Hull highlights on BBC's match of the day - COME ON LIVERPOOL!!!!! I turned the machine on - it did not at the time have the top cover on it but once its all together you don't need the top cover to turn it on.

HEY PRESTO, NO YELLOW LIGHT OF DEATH!!!!!!!! I now have an extra PS3. will now do the various updates the system needs!!!

So yes the watchdog report made Sony look like a bunch of ********s, but for the time being it has worked. If it does go again i will just go ahead and do the same thing again.

As I said 20 mins @ 110c.

^^^^^^

Good thing to know that you can replace the motherboard in the PS3 and all other components will still work, thanks!
