i also rented the following DVDs (in anticipation of upcoming BD releases):

-Crumbs
is this documentary for real or one of those mockumentaries? it's hard to tell these days =P i know it's an older film. pretty whacky, dunno if BD will be wortwhile... but we'll see. not a huge fan of documentaries in general.

-Black Narcisus. looks like a combination of set and actual location shots. the color is inconsistent, so hopefully Criterion will fix that =P

Thanks Beta! I knew that I would get 5.1 with the DTV/cable TOS link, but was unsure if the optical input for the CD would get 5.1 as well. I guess the receiver will take and decode any 5.1 signal, no matter what the input designation may be.

Crumb. Not a mockumentary.

It's actually all sets. Yes, the matte paintings are THAT good.

Day 10 on my Mystery Train "shipment" from DD. I'll offer my thoughts on the film in another week or so when I get the film. Assuming they sent me the right item this time.

Crumb was made in 1994. That's not old.

I don't know if Pro-B or Dr. Svet would have the answer to this, but I was wondering how thick the blu-ray packaging is for "The Leopard." I already own the criterion's DVD release of it, and was hoping the packaging might be a little thinner than the DVD release (I'm starting to run out of room on my criterion display rack).

I'll still probably buy it just for the better transfer, but a thinner package would make rebuying it on blu even sweeter.

+1... I had never seen it, but was a big fan of Kiarostami. Great movie, and supplements. I need to check out The Traveler next... I had no idea there was a second feature film on the disc.

so when i do this, i don't watch the whole movie. i pop the disc in and view beginning middle, not too much from the ending. but i wanted to get an idea of the feel of the film and see if i'd like it or enjoy it. mostly to know if i want to own it to watch over and over again and again.

i borrowed a few more titles from the library:
-Close-Up. another docu. well it's in the library, i can take it out when i desire to watch it. dunno if i'd watch it more than once and in hi-def.
-Black Orpheus. i recently watched Orson Welles's incomplete unfinished It's All True along w/the an assembled cut of the 4 fishermen story. very interesting stories coming out of Brazil in general and its music... but (again). i just don't do well re-watching documentaries over and over again and again.
-Mystery Train. looks interesting. i might grab this.
-Paris, TX. much more diff. than Wings O' Desire though semi-similar themes of alienation & belonging, etc. looks fantastic, might grab it based on that.
-Red Shoes. er... probably not this one. not a big fan of ballet & movies about 'em.
-Che, hmmm very very political and many things over my head. not sure if i'll catch it beyond once.

on hold from library are Summer Hours and Brakhage.

thus, out of the upcoming/new Criterion Blu-Rays that i don't have yet, this is now my NEW wishlist for the July sale:
-Walkabout (maybe)
-Black Narcissus
-8 1/2
-Leopard
-Paris, TX
-Lola Montes
-Bigger Than Life
-Viva Sa Vie
-Stagecoach
-Mystery Train

and December Sale:
-7 Sam
-Thin Red Line
-Breathless

More Rumors from Criterioncast: "Cronos" in Dec. of this year, so sayeth Del Toro
http://criterioncast.com/2010/06/25/...december-2010/

since we know its coming anyway, it seems rather legit. Maybe the "something new" Criterion promised was that as many outlets as possible will announce releases/time frames before they get a chance too.

Haha, I highly suggest you guys watch that Del Toro interview just to see the smug look one of the interviewers is sporting when the cast of Chuck start geeking out over Guillermo. Also, "Space Tie" Jesus.

I am hope some of you might be able to offer guidance on my dilema. Many of you know more about Criterion then I do.

In Europe MoC are releasing some of Yasujiro Ozu movies from the 50's on Blu-ray but they are region lock. MoC and Criterion are two different company but they often release the same movies. Is there any chance that Criterion would release them here on Blu-ray, do you think? As Criterion release anything from the Eclipse Series? Should I just spend $80 and order Eclipse Series 3 set and be done with it? I love his movies but I have only seen them on a special French cable channel on TV so far. I have been holding off on buying the Eclispe set with the hope of getting a Blu-ray release but what are the chances of that?

BFI is releasing them
I'm sure that Criterion will release some of the major Ozu films in the future.
And don't count on it that we'll ever see Eclipse films on Blu-Ray, get the sets now.

Yes you are right it's BIF and not MoC sorry about that.

Thanks for the reply

just received my copies of Man Who Fell to Earth ordered from a few days ago. Ummm, STILL in cardboard cases! does this mean that the initial wave of Blu-Rays in cardboards NEVER SOLD OUT OF STOCK?

same thing happened to me.
I got mine from Criterion so
I'm guessing they never pressed regular plastic case versions.
I guess I'll be getting a replacement case for that one.
very frustrating.

Same thing here and mine came from Family Video after it was restocked so must be that all the stock is in cardboard.

Close-Up isn't technically a documentary, half of it is re-created/dramatized, although it features all the real-life people playing themselves.

Black Orpheus isn't a documentary either, it's based on the Greek tragedy about Orpheus and Eurydice. And it has nothing to do with Orson Welles.
