No, it's actually not. People aren't staring at a 1.5 inch screen watching cats chase laser pointers. They're watching cats chase laser pointers in a popup window while looking at other things on the rest of their screen.

Not that I would particularly (or care even slightly) if people ever did start watching cats chase laser pointers on a 1.5 inch screen.

I mean, why would I?

I don't care how people interact with social media now and I certainly don't care how 'future generations' will do whatever it is they decide to do or not do.

Why would I?
As a older gent, maybe you don’t care. For those this may affect, it’s a different story.

OhHhHhHhhHh.
The fact this can and will be implemented in major streaming services doesn't bother you? I mean, they want to keep eyeballs on their site/service for as long as possible.

Why would it? It's actually really helpful for what a large majority of YouTube is. Never thought a single thing of it in the year or so I've been able to do it.

Because this could become a ingrained way of doing things for younger people.

Read the last couple of paragraphs. In theory, you could have a mini YouTube player following you around the internet on any website. You therefore normalise the small micro screen. Do you see what I am saying here? What I have been saying for several years now.

I have a YouTube window opened up right now...so? The iOS app has done it for ages letting you find other videos or go into safari browser. I don't see an issue.

Before, you went into Youtube, watched a video on a big chunk of the screen and that was that. Now, you can browse the web while watching a tiny video or you can browse other videos while listening (let’s face it, that’s all you are doing on a 1 inch screen)

This learned behaviour doesn’t concern you for the future of video consumption?

So let me get this straight Steedeel. According to you Digital is a for the youth Because I’d put alchav21 somewhere in their mid to late 60’s and middle of the road Vilya is 56 and I’m 52. So how is it we stream if everything is geared towards the “kids” these days

You are all speeding the process up. Read the bloody article please, it couldn’t be clearer. It basically backs up my theory about the smal screen and video becoming even more passive. A min player that can follow you around the internet on phone, tablet, large monitor and more than likely tv screens has gigantic ramifications. They could well design future streaming services this way. What I am predicting is becoming more and more likely.

Cellphones are getting bigger and it's there so you can find other similar content or related videos. YouTube videos are mostly under 10 minutes, there's tons of baking, gaming, crafts, etc on there so if a video turns out to be meh or not explaining something you can drop it down and find something else while the original plays.

You realize the move of letting the video play helps the content maker and YouTube as the ads will still be there and they'll get paid due to longer play through that may not have occurred otherwise.

I just put on a video of Gaga from ASIB and clicked it down to see what all was in the playlist and ended up watching five more videos.

So....no.

No, because I don’t care. As Groot said, there’s more than one way to do things. So getting bent about this is as ridiculous as going sideways about how studios pushed trailers on us years ago on physical format ages ago

I am really glad I took most of the day off from this thread.

I take no issue with people posting what they want to post. I will react, or not react, based on the content therein. I'll be me and you'll be you.

I am not worried for the fate of movies, TV shows, TVs themselves, or any other existing art form. There is no evidence that any of these things are in decline. Until I see such incontrovertible evidence, I will continue to summarily dismiss any predictions of their impending doom.

People using part of their available screen real estate to watch something is nothing new nor is there anything alarming about it. Even a 56 year-old curmudgeon like me has been known to do it, albeit very infrequently.

Attention spans are not getting shorter; scientists have already disproved this misconception. I linked to a BBC news story that explained this just a few days ago.

New products and services do not scare me. I have seen quite a few added in my lifetime and I mostly welcome them. Except for the New Coke- that sucked. Crystal Pepsi was pretty lame, too.

I have more choices and more options than ever before and not a single art form that I enjoy has ceased to exist as a consequence of something new being developed. I am both wanting my proverbial cake and I am eating it, too.

But while you are searching for other content you are not consuming the video properly. Your attention is in two places. The same would be true if this was introduced by Netflix. People have already said they spend way too long browsing rather than watching. This would increase that habit while not actually consuming the content properly. It’s a really really bad potential trend.
If Youtube can force their mini screen while people browse other stuff, all the other services will NEED to implement the same system lest they lose eyeballs.

If a video turns out to be meh, surely the best thing to do would be to turn it off?

Also I couldn’t care less about helping Youtube if having to watch a mini display is the way to do that, I would rather quit.

Attention spans are absolutely getting shorter. I don’t care what the article says. It’s just common sense. Look around you. Young people grab their phones the second they are bored or something else loses their attention. I see it with football matches as well. Both at home and live. Also the cinema, the theatre, resteraunts.

It’s a bit different watching a 1-1.5 inch screen to having to watch a few trailers.

By the way, I have just tested it on my 5.5 inch phone and the mini screen is not even 1 inch imo. What is the ******* point?

I’m not sure you are using the same feature that is discussed in the article. It is only rolling out this week and on mi lie, the screen is that small, you can’t make out details imo. It snaps into the right hand corner of the screen. For the life of me, I can’t work out who would want to watch a micro screen of less than one inch while browsing other cintent. It just doesn’t make sense. You are stuck Inbetween both worlds with a poor experience both ends.

The thing I find hilarious is that every single person scoffed at me for suggesting that people in future would watch video content on a 1.5 inch smartwatch, yet hear we are with people seeming incredibly keen on watching content on a screen even smaller! Yes, they may be browsing other content BUT the video player is still minute. It’s crazy that this option has been demanded on laptops and tablets too, I mean WTF?

I can see a time when they dont even bother with the option of been able to make the mini player full size.

Like I said above, they could remove the ‘make screen full size’ option. What would you do then? Especially if it’s across services. They may want to test if people would even use it once the ‘second screen within a app’ takes hold.
