Another wish list to contribute, though I have no idea what the rights situation for each title is. This is for North American/U.S. releases...I'm not buying an international BD:
- a Kathryn Bigelow film: either Near Dark or Strange Days would be preferable. The former is out of print and the latter has never been released in BD. Zero Dark Thirty would be great too, as the special features of the BD last year were lacking. This is a great director who really needs some attention from Criterion, especially when others of lesser skill and vision have their entire oeuvres in the collection. - The Gospel According to St. Matthew...the greatest Biblical film ever made - Symphonie Pastorale...Palm D'Or winner, gorgeous B&W film, with cinematography by Armand Thirard (Wages of Fear). No blu-ray exists. - Blow-Up. No blu-ray release exists. Incredible film. - McCabe & Mrs. Miller. No blu-ray release exists. Gorgeous film. Nashville was recently added. This is another Altman classic, and somewhat underappreciated. If it's more accessible, it should appear on lists of greatest American films. - Chinese Cinema: Huo Zhe (To Live), Raise the Red Lantern, Farewell My Concubine. I'd 100% love an Ang Lee film added to the Criterion The Ice Storm...Crouching Tiger would be amazing, down the line. Blu-Ray Updates: - Passion of Joan of Arc. We're still waiting... - Bicycle Thieves - Ikiru - La Strada - The River. Would be a gorgeous BD. - The Virgin Spring - The Last Emperor (both cuts together with their proper aspect ratio) |

Happy New Year to everyone. I've still got about 2½ hours until midnight, but I just ate a big meal and the torpor is setting in. I'm about to wash up and crawl into bed to read until I fall asleep (in case anyone's interested, it's the seasonal-themed Spirit of Steamboat by Craig Johnson -- one of his Longmire books).

Also The Edge of Heaven on blu-ray would be great. Can't believe I forgot it...it's on my list.
I'm loving reading the wish lists. Some great suggestions. Man With the Movie Camera's bound to show up somewhere. Some Sean Connery-Sidney Lumet would be inspired, like The Hill or The Offence, but I think the latter was just recently released. |

All I want is a Blu release of A Matter of Life and Death.
Though if I'm pushing my luck, I might as well as throw in The Kid, Hard Eight, Dr. Strangelove, along with re-releases of Hard Boiled and Chungking Express. |

Happy New Year all. Apologies for the giant post. Let me jump into the ring with my own list of Blu-ray hopefuls for 2015:
Decline of Western Civilization - Hasn't seen a DVD release in ages (and I'm not sure it was ever officially licensed). With its cultural significance it deserves to get a proper release (along with parts I and II). Director Penelope Spheeris has been working to get this released. Why can't Criterion put their resources toward helping her achieve that? Fiend Without a Face - Criterion released it on DVD. I've said it a million times and it deserves to be said again: a movie about floating brain monsters using their spinal cord tails to strangle people deserves to be seen in HD! Plague Dogs - With Watership Down on the way, this is a logical choice. While the rabbit film has the better story, I think the creative team did a better job on the whole with this follow-up. Stevie - The more Steve James films the better. Felidae - If releasing animation becomes a common thing, then what better than this tale of murder? Midori - Same as the one above except this title is more disturbing and more obscure. It was a labor of love made almost exclusively by one man. It premiered in a special theater where live actors performed the lines live while other people created the sound effects. If that isn't arthouse enough for Criterion then nothing is. Talk to Her - Almodovar's best. Would also be happy to see Bad Education, Kika, Live Flesh, and Labyrinth of Passion. The Straight Story - The forgotten David Lynch film. Stands out among his work, but good on its own merits. Sid & Nancy - Know this is a long shot given it has a BD release, but seeing that Criterion owned the license once I like to keep hope. The rare film that had me in tears by the end. May - The longest shot of all that I've mentioned. Best slasher film ever. Ebert gave it four stars. Wes Craven and Guillermo del Toro have singed its praises. Deserves to be on Blu-ray and would make a fine addition to the Collection. Another box-set like Zatoichi. Wouldn't we all love another surprise like this? I'm not sure what series of film could use the treatment. If I dream, there's many choices. Say the entire works of Russ Meyer or a set of Pinky Violence titles. Or more obscure like an Alexander Petrov or Trent Harris collection. Probably wouldn't sell but I'd like it. Quote:

First movie I watched in 2015?
Calamari Union! A very obscure 1985 film from Aki Kaurismaki! Totally unexpected. Even more unexpected is I found myself eating Lo Mein and Seafood Wontons with a friend in a Cambodian restaurant when the clock struck midnight. First time eating Cambodian for me. I only had one beer tonight too. Here's my "want" or "wish" list for newer films (made after the 70s) that I hope to see in the Criterion Collection in 2015 or whenever! New titles I want to see: After Hours Martin Scorcese Hard Eight P.T. Anderson 25th Hour Spike Lee The Crying Game Neil Jordan The Good Thief Neil Jordan Lone Star John Sayles City of Hope John Sayles Arizona Dream Emir Kusturica Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai Jim Jarmusch Suburbia Richard Linklater The Straight Story David Lynch Death and the Maiden Roman Polanski The Pianist Roman Polanski Frantic Roman Polanski Witness Peter Weir Smoke Wayne Wang Solaris Steven Soderberg Stalker Andrei Tarkovsky Upgrades I want to see: The Last Wave Peter Weir Before the Rain Milcho Manchevski House of Games David Mamet Short Cuts Robert Altman My Own Private Idaho Gus Van Sant Andrei Rublev Andrei Tarkovsky Stranger Than Paradise Jim Jarmusch Last edited by jw007; 01-01-2015 at 09:59 AM. |

There is a rumour that Criterion are planning on releasing this one in the near future
Co-sign all these titles. I would also like to see a few more Bresson and Fellini upgrades too, especially Au Hasard Balthazar and Juliet of The Spirits. |
