I will never for the life of me work out why this harmless throwaway bit (which isn't even spoken on camera by the way) gets so much pearl-clutching criticism whilst the same people who decry it for bringing crass real-world humour into Star Wars didn't seem to mind when Solo put not one but two Austin Powers-level dick jokes into a Star Wars film.
It was practically ripped from an SNL skit parodying Star Wars. You can add a laugh track to the scene showing Hux and it doesn't at all feel out of place.

I may’ve posted something about this two or three years ago, but what the hell — it’s been awhile, and I’ve recently been revisiting this playlist and enjoying the hell outta it.

This is my personal playlist that tells the entire Skywalker Saga, with the “rule” that I can only choose two tracks from each Episode, to make it manageable. The big exception is Star Wars ’77, which bookends the whole thing with its Main and End Titles.

In general, I tried to walk the line between my "personal favorite" tracks, and the tracks that would best tell the story; and this is definitely designed to TELL THE STORY. I wanted to represent as many of John Williams’ musical motifs as possible. This made for some painful choices: no “Princess Leia's Theme” (which is one of my favorites) because her motif is covered in “The Princess Appears”, and controversially no iconic “Imperial March” because that music is covered in “The Asteroid Field” (which is my favorite track of the whole saga, and also buys me a brief moment of the “Han and Leia” theme).

Anyhoo… spoiler tagged so as not to be TOO annoying… here ’tis, the playlist I think tells the whole Saga:

[Show spoiler]1. Main Title from Star Wars ’77*
2. Anakin’s Theme*
3. Duel of the Fates*
4. Bountry Hunter’s Pursuit
5. Across the Stars*
6. Anakin’s Betrayal
7. Battle of the Heroes*
8. The Princess Appears
9. Ben’s Death and TIE Fighter Attack
10. The Asteroid Field
11. Yoda’s Theme*
12. Luke and Leia* (this should probably be the Jabba Sailbarge Battle; I’ve been on the fence with this for years)
13. Parade of the Ewoks*
14. Rey’s Theme*
15. March of the Resistance*
16. The Rebellion is Reborn*
17. The Spark
18. The Rise of Skywalker*
19. The Force is With You
20. The Throne Room and End Titles from Star Wars ’77

*Anything marked with an asterisk is a symphonic presentation of the theme/motif that is NOT actually featured note-for-note in the movies. Some are very close to their theatrical presentations (like "Duel of the Fates" and "Battle of the Heroes"), and some are wildly different (like “Luke and Leia” and “The Rebellion is Reborn")

Nice to see that you’ve increased the amount of tracks from one to two per film. This is almost identical to my Star Wars “Greatest Hits” playlist that I made a while ago (16 of the 20 you chose are the same). I’ll give your list a whirl which sounds interesting: telling the story of Star Wars rather than just the “hits.” I take it for the Main Title track you chose the extended version that’s about five minutes long? I chose the shorter version that’s on the two-disc soundtrack since the extended part is featured in the End Titles track.

I wish there was a symphonic version of the Jedi Steps theme from TFA. I love that theme but it’s also part of the end credits of TFA.

Are Duel of the Fates and Anakin’s Theme not presented in their entire versions in TPM? I thought they were in the end credits.

Glad you enjoyed the list; very cool that so many of your choices are the same! Yes, my Star Wars Main Title is the extended one from the original "black album" released in 1977. And as far as I know, Duel of the Fates is VERY similar but not identical to the music used in the Phantom Menace finale. As for Anakin's Theme, it was indeed presented in the End Credits, but this full presentation of it never accompanies any "story" moments within the film. I appreciate your positive response!

This was posted in the Empire 4K UHD thread:

“Due to repeated violations of this site’s rules regarding material subject to copyright, this thread is permanently closed.

Any further discussion of unauthorized copying of copyrighted material will result in lengthy (or permanent) bans.”

Just warning everyone since most people thought an exception was made for Star Wars.

Yeah I saw some of that talk in that thread. I wonder what instigated the seemingly sudden change here (I imagine it couldn't be a planned Disney release of the OOT? Seems hard to believe at this point at least.). Anyway, that is that.

Oh. Geez. Sorry, was on my lunch break and read your post too fast... I don't think I could limit my track choices the way you did since every note of the original records is emblazoned on my brain since childhood, though your list is great and makes sense. You're a stronger man than I.

Thanks! I certainly also still listen to the full soundtracks in all their glory; John Williams IS Star Wars, to me... but this is just a fun way to experience the whole Saga in one sitting. From time to time.

I think even the biggest TLJ fans should be able to admit that some of the humour in that film is lame. It’s such a mixed bag in that regard since there are some genuinely funny moments also.

Yes, the idea behind the dialogue exchange does fit Poe’s character as presented in TFA, but that doesn’t excuse the execution of the bit in TLJ. Rian Johnson compares it to a Monty Pythons sketch in the audio commentary. And it’s the beginning of the 180 turn to how Hux was presented in the previous film, turning him into a comedic character all throughout the film.

The difference between that and the bit in TFA is that the latter doesn’t undermine Kylo as a villain. Kylo brushes it off then orders the massacre of the village, has Poe detained as a prisoner, and the next scene between them sees Kylo torturing Poe.

And the Hux/Poe joke isn’t even my least favourite of the film. It’s the stupid visual gag with the iron that references a parody film. It’s a joke that only works on opening night as it’s meant for the audience to laugh at themselves for thinking it was a ship. And it’s oddly placed in a moment in the film just before the serious throne room sequence.

[Show spoiler]

Sudden change indeed... especially since the most recent post since then appears to be from February of 2022.

Why kill a thread almost a year afterwards for discussing a film preservation project?

I think that is an incredibly generous way to phrase it. Respect to those uber-talented nerds who have done that work, but the source material isn't theirs to tamper with. Then again, I am firmly in the camp of honoring the wishes of the filmmaker regardless of whether or not I agree with them. These films belong to the artists who create them and they choose to share them with us. I want whatever their ultimate, final vision/version of it is.

Some recent posts were deleted before the thread was locked.

You’ll never see his final vision because he sold his rights. If he had kept them you’d occasionally be seeing new “ultimate, final” versions.

I for one love it when artists make their own films worse and I love big greedy corporations and I think we should all be quiet now and lick The Mouse's collective boot. Love you, Disney!
