I've just recently replaced the Samsung speaker bar in my main floor family/great room with a Sonos Playbar. Yeah, it's still technically a speaker bar, but there does seem to be a noticeable difference in the overall sound quality (sidenote, I currently just have it sitting on the stand below the TV; I intend to wall mount it, but haven't got the proper bracket yet; not sure if this will change the sound at all). These are quite pricey, as far as speaker bars go (although I got mine 2nd hand in mint condition), but if you are into the Sonos offerings, then it has that double usage. Plus this location is mainly basic (kids) TV watching, the odd blu-ray, etc., so I wasn't going to go crazy here for HT. I'm hoping to find a deal on the sub, and might eventually add the surrounds, but those are not musts. I'm not saying it is better than going with the AVR + speakers, but it is another interesting option. |

Not going to engage you with a like response to the smarmy comment, but I would ask the rhetorical question why you thought that an unprovoked slam was the appropriate response?

You *can* get a soundbar with excellent audio, but you *can't* get a component system in a compact size that hangs under your flat panel. An average soundbar that utilizes a separate subwoofer will actually give better low frequency response than a component system that has regular speakers alone. Some soundbars offer solutions for the rear channels such as wireless speakers. One model even has completely wireless rear speakers that recharge from the main soundbar. It's fairly obvious you and Lentulus Batiatus probably have never auditioned some of the better soundbars by Boston Acoustics, Pioneer, Yamaha, Monitor Audio, or this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JF8RWAE |

The Bose comment was not directly directed at you in particular but it's just that most of the time I hear comments about small satellite speaker being able to provide great sound, it come from Bose lifestyle owner that understand very little about audio in general and trying to justify the price tag they paid.
Don't get me wrong, there is a market for those but not at the price point they're selling them. Now regarding the mixes comment, your comments were that the rear channels output: - infrequent ambiance or echo - these effects are somewhat rare The point was never about dialog being mixed in the back but that ambiance and effects being rare. To that, I stick to my point. You want constant effects in the rears, take any latest Marvel movie for example. You want effects + score during most of the movie, listen to Tron Legacy. You want constant ambiance throughout the whole movie, listen to Seven and enjoy 2h of pouring rain. IMO, as long as the front speakers can output some semi-decent base (let's say 80/100Hz), the rear speakers are the most important speakers to start enjoying a HT, then a sub and then a center. there is no pseudo-surround from a soundbar that can compete with surround coming from real speakers. You are right when you say that I haven't auditioned a $1500 soundbar and there's a simple reason for that: while aesthetics might be important to some, it is not to me. Paradigm, like many other Canadian audio manufacturers was heavily involved with the research made at NRC. They make great speakers but If I have $1500 to spare in audio, I guarantee you that I'll buy a 5.1 system that will well outperform this particular soundbar. If aesthetics is your primary concern, then by all means, go for this one. Anyway, you are right, I know nothing about audio so I'll end this off-topic here or we can take it to PMs if you really want to. Last edited by bdpf; 06-25-2014 at 02:46 PM. |
