I totally agree

Very true. I am by no means a film expert and it's always a real joy to discover new films and creators (this year for example, I've begun exploring Yasujiro Ozu and Andrei Tarkovsky). I'm glad to know that there is such a wealth of things out there to experience.

Also, this year I went from having never heard of Come and See to owning it and being absolutely floored. What an incredible treat cinema is.

But I’m also a massive shill and love La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2 completely and unconditionally like the complete film bro that I am.
I keep reading Ebert's two 4 star reviews of Satyricon wondering what I'm missing. I've seen the movie three times, and each time I just end up watching the sets and costumes.

Perhaps it's the complete embrace of the fractured nature of the source material (an incomplete poem) that does it for me. There are times when the main characters feel so different from scene to scene that they cease to feel like the same characters.

It really is like a pure dreamscape, but I just don't think it works in the cinematic medium.

And 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita are both fantastic.

Not really, Lynch has always held Fellini up as one of his main inspirations. Lynch’s films have never been as overtly satirical or political as Bunuel’s films.

The only Fellini film I've seen is the segment he did for Spirits of the Dead. I've had 8½ on Blu-ray for years and still haven't watched it...

I remember being in my mid-20s thinking that I had seen everything that mattered because I had seen all of the IMDB's top 250 that I cared to watch and most of the Best Picture winners. It was such a narrow view, but I just kept watching (thanks to my Netflix DVD subscription that I've had since I was about 20) and realizing that there's so much more out there.

Film has been a medium for over a hundred years and dozens of countries have taken part. It's vast.

My new small obsession is Polish film, but so little of it is English friendly.

Yeah, only someone who understands neither Bunuel nor Lynch would make that comparison.

Lynch has even said he's never seen a Bunuel film.

That's the spirit! I was just about to say that everyone here should watch more Ozu and stop nagging about Fincher and Nolan all the time.

Lynch always said he was influenced by Bunuel.

Both are surrealistic directors.

I apologize if it seemed rude. But generally speaking, I don't think most of people in boards are "experts" since you can't quantify someone's else "experience" or knowledge about films.

And at the end of the day, it's all up to a personal opinion, even for guys like Ebert it was like this.

I think moviegoers or people interested in films more than the casual audience (not to knock them) is a more fair term.
