USC, seeking a replacement for fired coach Lane Kiffin, has already interviewed former Bears coach Lovie Smith for the position, according to a league source. It would ideally love to land former Super Bowl winning coach Jon Gruden, but that won't be happening.

Smith was let go by the Bears following a 10-6 season in 2012, and was not a hot name with head coaching openings in the NFL last offseason, but could get more consideration this offseason with more openings expected. Smith has a deep history in the college game as well.

Early last month Smith's son, who serves as his agent, denied a report that an interview with USC had taken place at that time, but, according to a source, the school has spoken with Smith. USC is not commenting on the process.

Sources said that University of Washington coach Steve Sarkisian was well positioned to land that position, though a recent three-game losing streak may have cooled his star some. Gruden, if he returns to the sidelines from the broadcast booth, would most likely do so at the pro level

Not sure why teams bother anymore. Unless their going to throw ridiculous money (>Nick Saban money) at Gruden he isn't taking a coaching job. He gets paid huge money for doing very little. There's no reason for him to take a full time coaching job.

Yeah, he just does an interview every couple years to keep his name out there.

He is a very good backup, but he is not Duke. Sad to see that our backs cannot be used in the passing game as Morris is unable to throw screens or short passes.

I would actually like to see a MNCG between FSUe and Orrygun. That would be a fun game to watch.

I think Stanford knocks Oregon off this week. And LSU should at least have a shot with Alabama. A 1-loss Alabama likely stays ahead of OSU, but no chance with FSU being undefeated.

Kansas won't fire Weis after this season because he would be due a $7.5 million buyout and they can't afford that after spending $6 million on Turner Gill's buyout in 2011 and $3 million on Mark Mangino's buyout in 2009.

They never should have fired Mangino in the first place. He made Kansas into a contender for the Big 12 title and led them to an 12-1 record in 2007 with an Orange Bowl victory and #7 ranking but there were some complaints about him being verbally abusive and this was at the same time as the Mike Leach Texas Tech situation so the administration may have overreacted.
