Many of the above for me, I guess. In no particular order (except for Kubrick being on top!):

Stanley Kubrick

Akira Kurosawa

Ridley Scott

Luis Bunuel

Orson Welles

Howard Hawks

John Ford

Charles Chaplin

Michelangleo Antonioni

Michael Mann

Hayao Miyazaki

Paul Thomas Anderson

Sam Peckinpah

Joel & Ethan Coen

Robert Altman

Don Siegel

Clint Eastwood

Robert Aldrich

James Cameron

Quentin Tarantino

George Romero

Jim Jarmusch

Woody Allen

And that is just off the top of my head! I could probably add a couple of dozen more with some more time . . .

Most of the few truly great ones have been mentioned already.
I would just add these-

Jean Pierre Jeunet
Gaspar Noe
Darren Aronofsky
Alejandro Jodorowsky
Elias Merhige
Giuseppe Tornatore
Peter Thorwarth

Julie Taymor.
Only directed 3 films for theaters:
Titus,
Frida,
Across the Universe.

But 3 works of art.

I hate when people ask for "Favorite" and then give more than one.

It's very hard to choose just one....but I think Cronenberg would have to be at the top followed by Almodovar, although they are very different. Give me 5 more minutes and I might change my mind....

I am also for Ridley Scott. And maybe Kubrick next. If anyone cares my least favorite I can think of are Uwe Boll and Paul W.S. Anderson.

i can understand people picking kevin smith, as he's done a lot of fine work and has been doing so for a long, long time. christopher nolan i can't see though. sure batman begins and the dark knight were fantastic. but aside from that there isn't much more he's done that is really phenomenal. i really dug the prestige and insomnia, but i wouldn't say they're masterpieces of filmmaking. it's too early to tell how good christopher nolan is. or will be.

as for favorite directors, i don't really have one. my two favorite films of all time are by real no name directors who i don't think have proven themselves to be master directors. rob bowman for example has only done one excellent movie and from there sort of went downhill. at least in terms of movie making. so if i had to make a list of directors it would be one whose work i have overall enjoyed. they're not favorites, but i like their work. as for a list here goes:

bryan singer
steven speilberg
kevin smith
sam raimi

I) Among those directors who also wriite or co-write the films they direct, maybe:

Orson Wells (virtuoso use of the medium)

or

Stanley Kubrick (As Zefferelli said, he makes us ".... dream, eyes wide open" (re: 2001: a space Odyssey)

II) Among those directors who don't take a writing credit, but are known for shaping their films in the script or storyboard stages, maybe:

Alfred Hitchcock (who even created off screen sound scripts, on occasion)

III) Among directors who just direct, maybe:

William Wyler (who rung some amazing performances out of actors who didn't do to well with most other directors, and created some of the most moving, powerful films ever made).
