Seems like most of the reviewers are turned off by it's weird nature and I know most of them have not read the original 2 novels.

But alas if they insult the books they would be deemed idiots because they're considered classics. I haven't finished reading both books yet but they're very odd and polarizing.

The original movie itself is weird as hell. It seems this movie is only continuing that story. I hope this film is enjoyable. Shutter Island didn't do much for me and Wolfman was just pure out trash.

It's harsh, but the scariest part is, 9 times out of ten he's usually right. So I guess it may end up being a flop afterall.

Ouch..

this sucks.. i must say if this sucks that would be J Depps, 2nd film
Chocolate Factory was
Horrid.

Hardly horrid. I liked what Burton did but the film itself didn't do much for me. It wasn't a bad film by any means, I just didn't feel too interested.

To read the books, you just have to GET THE JOKES. (Tim, obviously, doesn't. )
You have to know logic to write nonsense, and Carroll was a math-and-logic geek.

In the first book, Carroll wanted to recycle some of the best improv interactive-story sessions he had with the Liddell sisters, and throw in a few of his worst puns and silliest Victorian-poetry lampoons (and occasional Elizabeth I jokes) into a thinly strung-together A-B storyline to connect them together.
In the second book, Carroll structured it around a a fifteen-move chess strategy he'd developed (which is why the Queen of Hearts was a card but the Red Queen was a chess piece...Confused them, did we, Tim?), and "expanded" the storyline this time to include the gimmick of Alice meeting nursery-rhyme characters, such as Humpty Dumpty, the Lion and the Unicorn, and, of course, the Tweedles.

...Y'know, it's just not that deep a book, people. Like, maybe, YOU'RE the ones on drugs and he wasn't?
(I remember, back when Monty Python first appeared, fans also thinking "Man, those guys have gotta be on drugs!"...Um, no, they weren't, actually. Although I suspect fans asked for pretty much the same similar reasons.)

I'm not saying it's deep it's a very odd book and Carroll wrote it under drugs.

And how can you say Burton got it wrong? Have you seen the movie?

You've bashed both Fantastic Mr Fox & Where THe Wild Things Are which ended up being fantastic films because they're not the kids books anymore. =|

I just can't wait for Inception. In the meantime, my theater is pulling the same stunt they did with Avatar and not even offering Alice In Wonderland in 2D.

WTF? Not 2d? Your theater is out to scam you, how far are other theaters from your house?

I have one that's 30 minutes away, not a bad drive, just a straight highway road.

One is 20 minutes (I frequent that the most)

One is 15 minutes (it sucks, too many kids and small screens and crappy chairs)

There's basically a good amount.

The arthouse theaters are 40 minutes away or 35. I've never really traveled to one yet.

I have two theaters within 20 minutes of me that had the rights to play Avatar and Alice In Wonderland. They are both owned by the same theater chain, so both of them had the same scheme set up with Avatar. It was playing on multiple screens but all of the screens were 3D. I was just checking the listings on Fandango and the same deal is going to happen with Alice In Wonderland too.

I am in West Texas and there aren't very many options here as far as moviegoing is concerned. I'm in Midland which has one theater (14 screens), Odessa has 2 theaters (one with 12 screens, the other with 11 screens) but the Odessa theaters are different companies so they always fight over exclusive rights to play certain movies, and then the next closest big town is 2 hours away (Lubbock).

(I refer you back to the Monty Python parallel--
Remember back when we didn't know what Cambridge-spawned satirical British comedy was like, and thought it was, like, really weird?...People talking about dead parrots, 'n stuff?)

Well, I won't know until it opens how much of it he got wrong, I was only counting as far as what we see in the trailer:
- The Red Queen was NOT the one who said "Off with their heads"
- Tim seemed to know that there was a pig somewhere in the book, but just wasn't sure where or how,
- The White Queen in the book was considerably older than Anne Hathaway, and demonstratably a bit dimmer

But the rest of it can be passed off as his just making the whole darn thing up.
With help from "Beauty & the Beast" screenwriter Linda Woolverton, and lord, don't get me started on book-faithfulness discussions about THAT one.

- We have not seen much of the White Queen though and does it matter about the age difference? The main character in I Am Legend was a German man with blonde hair. We got a good performance from Smith instead.
- I don't get the pig comment.
- Well since it's a reboot/sequel, most people know Alice in Wonderland for that infamous line and Burton just combined both characters and put the Red Queen instead because she hadn't been used yet. Though Burton should have recognized that it'll just add more to the confusion of the two characters.
-As for Burton making everything up there's nothing wrong with that. He's not trying to remake the original movie which is a classic and he can't make an adaptation of Through the Looking Glass because some of the elements from that book were used in the original movie. Instead he's using unused elements. And most people have compared it to Through the Looking Glass.

And you hated Beauty and the Beast because it wasn't faithful to the book? That's sad because it was a fine movie on its own right. People have to accept that movies are separate entities than books. Both have to be good in their own right and distinguishable.

Neither did Tim:
In the book, the iconic Tenniel illustration of Alice holding a pig doesn't really have anything to do with the main story (just a side gag of Alice minding a "baby" for the Duchess: "It would have made a dreadful child, but it makes a rather handsome pig")
But Tim, never one for subtlety of interpretation, tunnel-visioned that anything in the story probably has to do with involving the Hatter or the Red Queen of Hearts--So in the movie, we get a gag about the RQoH using a pig for a footstool, the same way she used flamingos and hedgehogs for croquet, like in the Disney movie...There, that's close enough to iconography.

(Note the similar "Is it the original pop-cult movie everybody remembers or isn't it?" ambiguity, as with apes and chocolate factories...)

I'm looking forward to seeing this this weekend, despite the bad reviews. I must admit though, that I'm not familiar with the books at all. I recently found out it's going to be offered in 3D, but I'm not sure if I'll want to mess with that or not.
