Last night I had the awesome experience of being able to go to the cinema and watch John Huston's The Maltese Falcon for the first time as part of the Flashback Cinema with my awesome wife (she agreed to go with me even though she isn't a film buff like me). It was one of the best experiences I've had in a theater. We arrived early and we were the only patrons in the theater until a few minutes before the start of the film. The 6 other people who arrived were very quiet and respectful during the whole thing. The movie was amazing! The acting, dialogue, and direction was awesome! It was interesting to watch a film from 1941 (53 years before I was born) at the movie theater. The aspect ratio being 1.37:1 was especially cool to see in such a blown up screen. I will definitely be purchasing the Blu-Ray soon and re-watching it. Even my wife enjoyed it. I would highly recommend watching this if you haven't before. I am a fan of some older black and white movies, but now I really want to dive deep! This is the stuff dreams are made of!

I’m about to pull the trigger on that Bogart 4-film set, which includes this disc, and just to double check, this does NOT have the previous 1931 pre-code and 1936 adaptations, even in SD? I’d like to have them for completions sake. I know I can get the bonus disc from the 2006 set individually on eBay, but there is no other release for those films anywhere, even on DVD? Also, I’m worried that 2006 disc will have disc rot like other Warner DVDs of that period.

Correct. The blu-ray only contains the 1941 edition.

Almost a Decade after the previous release, we still don't have one that includes the other adaptations of the story. Oh well, I think I should just snap this up (which will hopefully also trigger a WAC announcement of a new 4k restoration.)

That Bogart set is pretty hard to top...4 of his best films along with an envelope containing original poster art is a steal for $30. The problem is the stacked disc format, I really need to buy a 4-disc Blu-ray case to resolve that problem.

And it’s OOP too because Warner no longer has the license to African Queen since their Paramount deal expired. I doubt it will ever fetch high prices though because Paramount reissued the film themselves. I wanted to get this set because it would go nicely with my Bogart/Bacall set from WAC. The 2008 collector’s edition of Casablanca was my first Blu-ray (my grandma gave it to me as a gift 5 years before I owned a player), but I’m okay double-dipping for the remastered 2012 disc, at least until the inevitable 4K UHD comes out.

I thought WAC had maybe reissued the other Maltese Falcon adaptations on DVD, but that doesn’t even look to be the case.

I'm slightly bummed that I bought all of the individual WAC releases of the Bogie/Bacall films before that dropped, but my disappointment is greatly tempered by the fact that its cover art is pretty cheap and it's so nice to have the original poster art of those classic films (an Archive staple.)

The Bogie set is more justifiable because the cover art for all the solo releases was atrocious.

I just put this in for a spin a couple days ago. I have a regular craving for Bogart in my Cinema-viewing cycle and this film is elite Bogart. Great commentary track.

I’m curious if Warner Bros. will release a UHD 4K edition of “The Maltese Falcon” since it is the 80th anniversary year for the film? I mean I don’t see why it can’t happen.

If they do, I hope they use the original poster art because the Blu-Ray art is utterly atrocious.

I'd be all over some classic Noir or classic films in general on 4K UHD physical discs.

They certainly could, but this is also the same studio that skipped a 4K release for Gone with the Wind's 80th anniversary, and that's one of their biggest classic catalog sellers.

Unfortunately, Warner has been pretty slow to release any of their deeper pre-70's catalog titles on 4K, and there's no indication they'll be ramping it up by any means. They still haven't released any B&W films in 4K.

Good observation about B&W in 4K. I bet if I buy the blu-ray today for the 9.99 deal on Amazon the 4K will be announced tomorrow. >.<

Hey, Mr. Jinks:
Ordered. It was worth the 10 bucks to find out.

I'd been putting this one off for a LONG time. I watch it whenever I see it's on TCM and always watch Bogey's face to try to determine
[Show spoiler]when Spade has figured out who killed his partner
.

So will a new Blu or 4K of The Maltese Falcon be coming out for the 80th anniversary, preferably with the extra movies from the old DVD? Or will I be stuck double-dipping on those two old copies?
