I've never seen Avatar. Is that weird?

Is it worth a blind buy?

I bought the UK steelbook and then double-dipped on the CE. I wouldn't part with either.

I did not buy the bare bones release because at first i had never seen Avatar. My parents bought it on dvd and i decided to go ahead and watch it. I ended up loving it. So I waited till the CE came out. (it was only like a month away)

Well I knew there was a CE coming out so I just waited for that one. There are enough movies I want so I don't feel the need to buy a movie knowing I will want to have the CE of a film later on.

Hadn't seen the movie before I got the CE, so the wow factor was present
Worthy of a blind buy thanks to the awesome visuals.

Personally, I've been wanting to purchase this but IJ'm staying away from any release of this movie on Blu-ray because of the initial warnings that Best Buy had on the Blu-ray when it was originally released to Blu-ray last year.

In my opinion, any studio who requires you to upgrade the firmware ini your Blu-ray player before you can watch the movie is a very poor decision on the part of the studio.

I don't have an old Blu-ray player, I have a recent model, that I purchased last year. Every movie that I have purchased has been able to "play" in my Blu-ray player right out of the package without having to upgrade the "firmware". The only problem I found was with Crank 2 and that was solely a "memory" problem which required me to use an external USB drive to get it to play.

The fault is that if a studio requires yoou to upgrade the firmware in a Blu-ray player before you can watch it, then the Blu-ray title that you purchased is defective. Firmware updates should be required if you want to view special features but to watch the main feature presentation on the Blu-ray disk ... it's bad form, on the marketing side.

I bought the last LG BH200 at one of my local Best Buys in April of 2009 as it was their display player that just sat on the shelf and was never powered on. I have had three titles that were not able to play, but quickly released FW solved these problems quickly. LG's customer service has been top notch and it's because of this that I have a high regard for LG and its products. I even tried to find another BH 200 because I like that it plays BD, HD DVD, DVD, and CDs and bitsteams without hardly any hiccups whatsoever. Of course I could also say the same about Sony and my fat 40 GB PS3.

HD Goofnut, I'm not complaining about how good studios are in releasing Blu-ray movies with firmware. I'm complaining about the fact that when you go into a store to buy a Blu-ray movie, or if yoou order such a movie online, that you should be able to place the Blu-ray movie in your Blu-ray player and be able to watch the movie without any updates.

Now, if special bonus features require firmware updates, then I don't have a problem with that. But, to require a firmware update before you can ever watch the movie you purchased? It's selling knowingly defective merchandise. DVD's never had this problem. If you had an exceptionally older DVD player, then you might have had to purchase a new DVD plpayer, but, that's all.

I don't know why, but if I purchase the movie Avatar and I have to update the firmware before I can watch it, then it's defective because the movie should already be compatible with Blu-ray players that have been made within the past year or two. There should be some level of expectation that when you buy a movie that it should work in your player.

Like I said, Avatar has got to be the only movie that I have ever come across, that has required you to update your firmware before you watch it. I'm just not that comfortable buying a Blu-ray movie that already comes with its built in "will not play with firmware update" warning. It's the only movie that I know about that has come with this warning.

I simply read the packaging and any displayed "store notices" before purchasing a Blu-ray movie. Now, I'm not saying that this hasn't been corrected by the studio, but, it'll always be a constant reminder to me to not purchase Avatar. It's a shame because I was going to wait until all of the hype died down before buying it.

Sometimes, movie studios and retailers can doom the sales of a movie by their actions. I still want to see the movie but my impulse is to stay away from movies that come with "consumer" warnings.

I have the original version UK steelbook, original HK iron pack, and CE HK steelbook. So, yea I like the movie a lot. One of my most viewed blu-rays.

Funny... I voted None, I dislike Avatar, but in fact I do own it. I purchased it because I (stupidly) deemed it to be a required own. I can't stand the movie.

Anyway, I have the bare bones edition, and it is the only edition I will ever own.

I bought a Panny bd80 a year and a half ago. I updated the firmware one time to fix a freeze problem. I've not updated it since. It has played everything that has been attempted through it including both versions of Avatar. Blaming the studio for it not playing in a player is not fair IMO blame the player. BTW I voted on the double dip but I sold the original version after the CE came out.

I just watched this (CE) for the first time on Blu, previously I'd only seen it only on DVD. WOW! I don't have 3D, but parts of this sure seemed 3D-ish! Incredible!!!
