Lots of great classics mentioned so far, but nobody's really talkin' old yet!

Among my favorites are THE SPOILERS (1914), YOUNG ROMANCE (1915), THE GOLDEN CHANCE (1916), A GIRL'S FOLLY (1917), M'LISS (1918), MALE AND FEMALE (1919), THE PENALTY (1920), THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE (1921), THE TOLL OF THE SEA (1922), OUR HOSPITALITY (1923), to name just ten, and numerous others. It would be hard to make a top ten from just the individual year 1915 or 1916, much less all pre-1960, pre-1990, or pre-2010.

Some favorite old films actually available on Blu-ray would include THE BIRTH OF A NATION (1915), THE CHILDREN OF EVE (1915), INTOLERANCE (1916), THE DEVIL'S NEEDLE (1916), BUCKING BROADWAY (1917), POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL (1917), THE PENALTY (1920), THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1923), THE NIBELUNGEN (1924), THE GOLD RUSH (1925), WINGS (1927), CITY GIRL (1929), the Buster Keaton collection, and many more.

Roman Holiday. It's magical, old-time Hollywood. I loved it. I really wish we'd get a blu-ray for it!

I believe it was Lauren Bacall who said " There's no such thing as an old movie if you've never seen it before."

How do you define "old?"

My favorite movie from the New Hollywood era is The Godfather. If we're talking pre-70's then it's 12 Angry Men.

Way, way too many classic movies I love to pick a favorite above all others. However, my favorite oldest movie by year is Die Nibelungen (1924), followed immediately by The Big Parade (1925).

I love the old epics like, The Ten Commandments, Ben Hur, and Cleopatra.

The scale, the many extras, the costumes and scores. There's something special about them, especially since we'll probably never see movies made like that again.

The Maltese Falcon (1941) is the oldest of the permanent fixtures on my all time favorites lists.

The General (1927) and Sunrise (1927) are probably the oldest movies I was really blown away by.

Lawrence of Arabia had scale for days. Showing these modern cinematographers how mediocre they are.

Oh geesh... so many to pick from it's hard to pick just one. I'll go 1970 and before as far as what I consider now 'old'. But if forced to pick 'one'... The Great Escape.

The Great Escape
Lawrence of Arabia
Ben Hur
Planet of the Apes
Patton
My Fair Lady
The Ten Commandments
Scaramouche
Forbidden Planet
Shane
The Sound of Music
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
War of the Worlds
Bridge over the River Kwai
The Dirty Dozen
The Mark of Zorro (1940)

This is a broad question for me to answer.

Here are the latest Production Year Statistics for my Blu-ray collection, as per the Statistics page on this site...

I predict that my collection of 1950s films will eclipse the other decades within a couple of months, because I'm hitting a lot of orders from that era over the next few weeks.

Off the top of my head, I'll name a couple of favorites for each older decade...

1910s: Bucking Broadway
1920s: Nosferatu, The Big Parade
1930s: King Kong, Stagecoach
1940s: Rebecca, The Maltese Falcon
1950s: Rear Window, Vertigo

yeah but she started doing movies in the 1940's - there weren't really old movie then

Casablanca. perfect example of a movie where the studio didn't think much of it while making it yet it works and people love it.
