While one questions whether or not WB would actually release a 4K version after how the release was handled in 1990, one wonders if Dante could convince them to lease it out to someone like Shout! or Arrow.

Damn, has it really been almost ten years since this came out? I still remember being hyped for the Blu-ray lol.

You know what I always wish they did? You know the part when the Gremlins start screwing with the movie (the scene with Hulk Hogan), I wish that they did one like they were messing with the disc somehow like how they had them screwing with the VHS tape.

On a related note, I wish there was a way to choose which version of that scene you watch with the movie. It’s great that it was at least included as an extra, but the VHS version was the one I grew up watching, having never seen it in theaters, so that’s always my preferred version.

Was it handled poorly?

It seems like many of poor Joe Dante’s films had botched distributions. Like THE HOLE, for instance, which didn’t really have any. That should have been a hit.

After how many years WB spent trying to convince Dante to come back, they positioned/dumped it to open directly against "Dick Tracy" to keep that from eclipsing "Batman"'s box office records that were set the previous summer.

I don't think it was. It was a sequel to a massive hit from five years prior, it was advertised like crazy (TV commercials were constant), it had several merchandise tie-ins, and it got a large release in the Summer of 1990. The reviews were good but it just didn't make any money. I don't think you can blame Warner Brothers for its failure.

Awesome movie. It was like a Loony Toons parody of Gremlins.

Haven't seen this movie probably since I saw it in the theater as a little kid, but that's how I remember it.

I love Gremlins 2, probably more so than the original, but I can see why it failed. It was just too arch. The original worked so well because the humour was subtle, so it could be read as either a dark comedy or a straightforward monster movie. Phoebe Cates’s famous scene talking about her dad epitomizes this. The sequel was an out and out parody, including of the original film itself, and I think that put a lot of people off, both those who appreciated the restraint of the original’s comedy aspects and those who saw it as a horror film.

I absolutely love Gremlins 2. The first one is iconic but this film is so much fun and a worthy sequel to a film that honestly probably didn't need one. I'd love a 4K or a Scream Factory CE with loads of extras and a nice slipcover...

It’s definitely a showcase for all kinds of Gremlins puppets.
I enjoyed the movie a lot.

GREMLINS 2 is one is the greatest and most underrated sequels to a classic ever made, just as good in its own way as the first. I love Joe Dante.

Yes, I will never forget how hard I laughed when Phoebe said those lines. It was jaw dropping in how funny it was and that’s really when I knew Dante was having so much fun with the sequel.
