Oh no, UK films are generally 4% faster than there American counterparts, even the BBFC website says so. The UK has always had the uncut release, and we are receiving the uncut on blu ray anyway.

So those of you who have the us blu ray: Is it as dull/washed-out/ grey as those screencaps?

mainly in the darkly-lit scenes, but the bright scenes are fine. I don't know what's up with some of those screencaps:

1. Screencap #1 (policeman looking up at the building): when I watched my blu-ray, that scene looks brighter. The lighting in that screencap looks bizarre as if it's about to be a thunderstorm with dark clouds. This was an overcast morning, but it didn't look like that.

2. Screencap #5 (Mad Dog pointing gun): the video during this fight scene looked awesome. Once again, I don't know why that's showing as dark.

3. Screencap #10 (Mad Dog and brother standing together): this screencap is a better representation of most scenes, but that screencap still seems to be lacking definition.

4. Screencap #14: (Mad Dog, Boss, and bro standing together): I don't know what the screencap is doing here. It was clearer watching the Blu-ray. I don't remember their hair blending into the backgrounds as shown in that screencap.

The main thing that bugged me was the DNR pasty-face effect (but not even close as bad as on that new Predator Blu-ray) but other than that I thought the video looked great in motion.

Hmmmm........I thought the speed-up issue was a PAL vs NTSC thing which is not present in the Blu-ray format!

UK edition looks to be identical to US edition, even offering up Mike Shinoda's score + original Indonesian soundtrack. and its definitely uncut!

I don't have a Blu-ray drive, but these are just phonecam shots to compare the darkness of the blu-ray.com screencaps. I didn't do anything fancy with my Blu-ray player (no brightness boosting on any tv or blu-ray player setting), but the video quality is not as dark as shown in the blu-ray.com screencaps. You'll notice that there is more detail shown when you actully watch this Blu-ray versus those blu-ray.com screencaps.

Damn how could that be, all other who have reviewed it said it looks pretty much as the screens with dark and muddy colors but yours is completely different?

The blu-ray does have dark and muddy colors....but mainly during the dark scenes, not during the brighter or well-lit scenes. The blu-ray.com screencaps were making it seem like every scene looks dark, which is not accurate.

Regarding the blu-ray reviews online, what I don't understand is how the really negative ones (such as the one here or at DVDverdict http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/ra...tionbluray.php) really critisize everything. The audio on this blu-ray sounds amazing and sounds exactly as it did in the theater. I don't know what's wrong with people's sound systems, but I would expect more reviews to look like "poor video quality, awesome audio quality" rather than poor video and audio quality.

Direct capture from the disc for comparison. Will edit if I didn't get the link right, I'm a nub at posting images. Full res png to avoid all confusion.

Looks a lot like the review. Not sure what toddly's got going on.

EDIT: that was ginormous, another attempt with a thumbnail!

Camera photos from a screen will never be accurate. Too many variables.

For the record, my BD looks like the blu-ray.com screenshots as well.

Noooooooooo!

I wanted the blu ray to look more like toddly's instead of the screencaps.

Can somebody do a thumbnail of the knife vs gun image then?

That's true (camera phone shots probably make video look even brighter) and screencaps are obviously more accurate, but things look better in motion too. In that screencap of the boss eating the noodles, the screencap practically blacks out the whole painting in the background (especially the right side of the painting). When watching the movie, I can actually see what's on that painting and it doesnt look totally blacked out (just as i can see the painting detail from my phone shot). Do people have their tv/blu-ray player settings on low contrast, cold, or some "cinema" setting?

Watch that scene and pause it, look at the painting. If you can see anything on the right side of the painting, that means that the screencap doesnt totally capture what the eyes see in motion. If you pause it and see that you cant see anything in the right side of the painting, then yeah, the screencap captures what you actually see.

But either way, the video quality isnt anything to brag about but it didnt distract me from my viewing experience either (such as with the distracting video quality on the blurays of Predator or Blue Crush).

If the UK bluray has much better video quality (and if the audio sounds as good as the usa version), i'll probably still double dip.

I wonder if Sony planned this all along to release a fair video quality version first so that they will release some Collector's Edition later with better video/audio quality since this is the type of movie (cult status) to release many blu-ray versions.

I can easily adjust my screen's settings to brighten details, though not make details appear that wasn't visible in the first place. Turning on dynamic contrast also does that, but I find anything dynamic incredibly annoying. With my calibrated settings (done with Spyder hardware) the BD looks as good as identical to the direct digital captures that I've seen.
