It's not about being the most flashy and entertaining, but it's not about being the most artsy and prestigious either. It's about being the best of the best, and bringing something to the table that people can connect with. I'd say that the academy is right about what they choose about 80% of the time. They've adjusted to the complaints many have lobbied against them in recent years, but we can't expect it to turn into the people's choice awards or the Golden Globes. We have those separate awards for that reason. Those are the places that some of these more blockbuster type films will get to shine, and while every once in a while that's the ones that get chosen by the Academy, usually they're looking for something else entirely than that.
The Social Network is another one. It was an ok movie. It was worth watching but I have never met one person who felt it was anywhere near the best of the year. I know my small social group and the message boards like this aren't the whole world but still you would think somewhere in the past few years I would have run into one person that felt it was the best movie of the year.

Really? I've met quite a few, outside of these message boards, who actually loved the movie and thought it was. Then I've met others who absolutely thought 'The King's Speech' deserved it, and fight me tooth and claw to prove they're right.

These award shows all come down to people's personal preference, really, and of course they'll be irritated if something they love doesn't win. Then you never hear the end of it. It's not a black and white thing though. There are so many different awards shows, and that's the reason. Different shows are for different things, and that's why it's good that we have variety. Just because you don't agree with one, doesn't mean something you want to win can't win something else at another award ceremony.

The problem is essentially the same handful of movies are nominated for all the awards shows. Most of the times the same one or two win most of the major awards. I try to force myself to watch as many of those movies as I can so I can form my own opinions but there are times when despite the movie being on my hard drive or the disc being on my shelf I can't convince myself to watch it.

I don't see how that's the Academy's fault.

It's the close minded critics fault. 90% of the movies they like and nominate come out in November or later. I understand how studios like putting movies they want nominated out at the end of the year so they are fresh in peoples minds but I have a hard time believe all the best movies of the year come out in such a short time period. Critics are just like grownup versions of goth kids. They like to be "different" than the majority because they think it makes them cool.

The nominated films have been very well receives by those who have seen them. Moonrise and Neasts of the Southern Wild came out in spring/summer and are critical darlings.

Well I am glad that the 50 people who saw Beast of the Southern Wild thought it was really good but shouldn't it be made available for everyone to see it? Or was it but it looked so boring people wouldn't see it or the ones who did wouldn't recommend it so it vanished quickly?

Nice that you found winners from these predicted nominees.

I bet I'm some 20-30% off with these.

I really want to see Zero Dark in the score category. Desplat is long overdue for the win.

The funny thing about predictions now is that after noms are announced the studios will rev up their campaigns and throw the entire thing sideways.

I agree that Desplat is overdue, but he composes so many films a year that it could be a problem. I may be underestimating Zero Dark Thirty there and in one or two other categories.

Rust and Bone is not France's entry. Not eligible.

In those predictions I'd replace Redmayne (totally not happening) with Robert De Niro.

I saw Beasts and loved it, it garnered wild hype at festivals, got released in July and managed to carry momentum all the way to the Oscars. But you know, you haven't seen it so obviously you know more than me.

Also, isn't there an MTV Movie Awards for films that don't appease to the Oscar needs

Prometheus used a lot of the sets and creature effects were practical. And when they did use CGI it looked damn fantastic.

I think I need to point out, the Oscar nominations aren't devised by a group of old men round a table deciding what they like best. It's over thousands of ballots going between members of the Acadamy. You don't go for surprises, you go for what the mass are talking about.

I know Hathaway is one of those "critic darlings" and Eddie Redmayne is a virtual unknown, but I found his supporting role to be more powerful (and better performed) than Hathaway's. I also haven't yet seen all the competing films, but to me Redmayne deserves it more than Hathaway from Les Miserables.
