It lasts all of about 1 second. Hardly anything to get worked up about.

I believe I've seen all of End of Eva dubbed. I have not heard Funimation's dub for Rebuild.)

To start with, Shinji, but that's more due to me hating Spike Spencer than with anything particular to Evangelion.

I think Allison Keith was flat out miscast as Misato: she voices a teasing/no-nonsense/vulnerable 29-year-old woman like an acid reflux-affected teenage girl. Tiffany Grant is fine as Asuka, but I wonder if it would have been more suitable if she and Keith had switched roles.

Amanda Winn-Lee is fine as Rei, but she performs the character as far too much of a blank slate and without emotion. If you listen to Megumi Hayashibara in the role, she isn't emotionless: her emotions are muted, but there's still a delicateness and fragility to her performance.

I remember Tristan MacAvery (Gendo) and Guil Lunde (Fuyutsuki) being good on the show, but like above, not a good fit with their respective parts, and should have switched roles. Regardless, MacAvery is no Fumihiko Tachiki, that's for sure.

Aaron Krohn would have been fine as Kaji if he didn't play the character so forcibly cheerful all the time.
[Show spoiler]At its worst, I feel it ruins the scene where Kaji tells Asuka his class trip was cancelled by Second Impact: Kōichi Yamadera delivers the line seriously while Krohn is extremely sarcastic with his.

Suzuhara had three voice actors in the TV dub?! Whatever, I thought Joe Pisano was fine, and his delivery on the line "don't worry, I'll have enough fun for both of you!" was great.

I don't remember much of Sue Ulu's performance as Ritsuko, other than she has nowhere near the tragic depth of Yuriko Yamaguchi.

Finally, Keel Lorenz: Rick Peeples and Tom Booker are absolutely no substitution for Mugihito.

Additionally, no one in either ADV/Manga dub pronounces "Evangelion" correctly: it's "eh-vangelion" (like "evangelism"), not "ay-vangelion," not "ee-vangelion." This is something which had become ingrained with fans, and I know it's pretty insignificant, but it still drives me crazy.

I'm not asking for an exact equivalent, I'm just asking for a good performance from a good actor, and maybe for parties involved in ADR to at least look at what the original performers do as a guideline rather than doing their own thing entirely (dub actors rarely see the shows they're doing dubbed).

More than anything, I was just shocked to see mediocrity lauded as a masterpiece.
and there you go. Judging something when you have not even listened to the whole thing. If you open up a book and read one page, do you throw it away if you don't like what's on it?

Spike Spencer is perfect as Shinji. Shinji is a tortured, confused troubled boy with pretty much depression to boot.

Misato is a flirty, strong minded but eventually weak and immature person. Allison Keith excels at it.

Aside from the voice actors, there is no possible way you can discredit the translators and english writers in succeeding to bring such a complex and at times confusing story to american audiences.

I said I sampled the dub heavily while watching it subtitled: I ended up seeing a good portion of the show in its dubbed incarnation. One page certainly isn't enough to judge a book, but if you read fifty you get a good enough sample size to tell if you're not going to like it.

Where was I discrediting translation? There's nothing wrong with the subtitle translation.

Ultimately I think the core of this disagreement comes down to personal viewing philosophy: I don't watch anime dubbed because I don't watch anything dubbed, for example. Obviously others are more tolerant (extremely tolerant, in this case ).

Edit: Something else. Part of why I also found it weird to see Evangelion's dub lauded is because a decade ago, I remember the show's dub widely being regarded as mediocre and flawed by fans, even by those who preferred dubs. So, again, it's just weird for me to see it now getting praise.

Two (and a half) comments is hardly something getting lauded.

A) So your opinion of dubs can't be trusted since you "don't watch anything dubbed". It's like asking a Republican about their thoughts on Democratic policies, or vice versa.

B) Your recollection of people's opinions over a decade ago? Well I guess you can bring that up? Regardless, ten years ago anime fans were extremely biased towards dubs....and yes I'm even talking abut dub fans since I'm one of them, and I know others.

C) It's sort of silly to, in the same block of text, say that this is a matter of viewing philosophy and then also say that those who don't agree with you are being tolerant. Clearly this is just a matter of opinion, preference, and also I think how the person initially viewed the show plays a part.

Is this type of discussion off topic? If so, someone let me know haha.

(I'm also going to bow out, but I wanted to offer a clarification.)

[Show spoiler]Let's go over my dub/sub viewing history.

My current practice is that I don't watch anything (anime or otherwise) dubbed for my own personal viewing, but that wasn't always the case. When I got into anime in 97/98 and for the next 2-3 years, it was almost exclusively dubbed, because it was cheaper on VHS (an important factor when you're only 16) and that's all they aired on TV. We got our first DVD player Christmas 2000 and I immediately switched to subtitles for video (it was like a genuine revelation) but still watched anime dubbed on TV (Toonami, Adult Swim). At this point I was about 50/50 dub vs. sub, but I was probably watching a greater variety of dubbed anime on TV.

That lasted for about 5-6 years as Toonami faded, I was getting burned out on Adult Swim, and I stopped watching Cartoon Network (within another 3-4 years I stopped watching TV entirely), so by the time I graduated college the only anime I was watching was subtitled on DVD (and fansubs I started viewing during this period). This eventually became my present sub-only policy. Most of my friends also stick to subs for our viewing parties, the only exception was watching Baccano dubbed due to the American setting. My brother's girlfriend also prefers dubs (she often does other things while watching) so I still hear snippets here and there.

And I'm done.

I'm tempted to do the same, however there is no guarantee that the new BR edition will contain the same special features. And who knows if it will be DNR'ed to death?

It's the roll of the dice.

Woah, wait a sec, they're actually releasing the TV broadcast version of the show? I thought the press release stating that the show and EoE were being finally being released on Blu-ray was a heart stopper, but then I hear mention of Death and Rebirth, followed by...

...Well, damn. The only way this could be better is if the broadcast episodes were released on Blu-ray (less fumbling around with multiple DVDs). But mostly I'm just worried about how good the restoration process will be. I haven't waited this long just so they can slap the Platinum effort onto BD and call it a day.

Placed an order for the Amazon Jp version. Even though it isn't English-friendly, there's no way in hell I'm passing this one up.

No English subs/dubs listed on Amazon or on CDJapan's website.

Edit: Ed beat me to it. If it cost less, I'd be in, too, and get all the required stuff to burn my own English friendly discs like others on Blu-ray.com have done. But at that price point, I don't feel like I should need to do that kind of work.

Boo on no subs, but I don't think that's going to stop me from preordering this anyway.

Agreed I'll wait for the eventual US release. Until then my Platinum Collection will be just fine.

I half wonder if it is too late to email the appropriate agency about including English subs. I wouldn't think the discs are completely authored and printed yet.

I just dont get why they dont include english subs on these Japanese releases. All it would do is increase the potential buyers. I guees i'll have to stick with my platinum dvds for now, hopefully a U.S. company picks it up sometime this decade.

It costs money to add subs. It's also a license hell like everything else. It's just not as simple as some people seem to think.

They'd have to license the subs from ADV/Section 23 and Manga, and those are probably the last two companies Khara want to deal with again.

The Japanese so often don't even bother putting Japanese subs on their own releases...

Basically it will include everything that the past DVD boxes have had plus the new Masayuki music videos and the BGM tracks.

There will be multiple store exclusives. Amazon Japan will have one for the BD box and the TV Broadcast DVD set (not sure if the same, details in the near future). HMV Japan also will have a exclusive bonus for the BD set only.
