I had no idea what to expect and flipping through channels, tuned in to Scream Queens; it's a pretty funny dark comedy horror show.
The scene with Ariana Grande typing into her keyboard for help was pretty comical [Show spoiler] The security guards' 3 rules were comical too. |

You say it isn't original but I'd love to know what other show/movie is like Scream Queens? |

Scream Queens is definitely for those who enjoy comedy with horror. In this case, dumb character comedy, kind of like when Leslie Nielsen in Naked Gun, drives his car into the scaffolding and all the guys on top, fall off with their paint buckets as he gets out, oblivious to what just happened and walking into the police station as they try to recover from the fall.
![]() Being original is often overrated, since there are only so many ways to tell a story and only so many ideas for a story. Eventually ideas will repeat over the course of human history. Bottomline is, no single show is made for all audiences, guaranteeing there will always be those who dislike it, while appealing to those who find it entertaining. |

Literally any crappy slasher flick. That's all this is. In fact, if anything, it's worse, because it presents itself as some grand masterpiece to the genre.

That's the biggest issue though. There's no genuine humor to be found in the show. I could understand if perhaps they were attempting to strike a balance between "tongue in cheek" and "wink and a nod," but everything here is played literal. All the lines are played straight, and the overall tone is serious. Naked Gun works because Leslie Nielsen remains relatively grounded and "normal" as the situations around him ramp in their zaniness. Here, everyone is presented as so over-the-top and outlandish that the situation doesn't have anything to play off of. It's just too much. Too in your face. There no straight man to help weigh anything against.

I honestly didn't think this season would offer up a show more tryhard than Difficult People but Scream Queens manages to take the cake.
As a fan of the early seasons of Glee and continued viewer of American Horror Story, I sort of had high hopes for this show but within the opening sequence, I knew this shows target audience was the Tumblr user crowd. Bulimia jokes, Self Harm jokes, 'Jamie Lee Curtis must be a dyke because she has short hair' jokes etc. The show is problematic as hell and the writing is weak. It's like Ryan Murphy sat down, said 'let me recreate American Horror Story: Coven's look, throw in Mean Girls, add in a dash of MTV's late 90's reality show Sorority Girls and add in a generic retread of the Sorority Row storyline and see if this works.' The one thing that TRULY incensed me was that Ryan Murphy spoke about writing Keke Palmer's role specifically for her, but its just ANOTHER stereotypical portrayal of what white gay men view black women as (minstrel props who all have weave and 'ghetto' as seen on Love & Hip Hop level dialopgue). 'Zayday' is just no. Might as well have named her Shaniqua or LaQueeta since that what he's going for. ("OOH THIS THE GOOD NEIGHBORHOOD Y'ALL", my head was literally in my palm in embarassment) I didn't think I would find a more problematic protrayal of a black woman than Tamra on the Mindy Project but Ryan Murphy outdid it ten fold. I won't be viewing the show in the future. Just not for me. |
