Sometimes I love my fellow kaiju fans and sometimes they drive me nuts. One thing they do that causes the latter reaction is the whole "but it's not like the movies I grew up wiiiiith!" attitude so many have toward the newer films, especially the Millennium ones. I'm so glad I didn't really get into these movies until my 20s, and was thus unaffected by nostalgia.

I don't expect them to be like the movies I grew up with -- and for the record, I like the Millennium films a lot more than the Heisei ones -- but being a "kaiju" fan I'm still very much aware that for the most part, these types of movies are pretty formulaic one way or another, and to make them great doesn't necessarily mean to either dumb them down or make them uber-realistic... it just means give us great monsters fighting with interesting yet minimal drama with the human characters. I don't want a repeat of the silliness of the 60's and 70's, but so far most attempts to steer away from that haven't been all that great to me, because the filmmakers think the human drama is more interesting than the actual monsters.

I guess what it comes down to is that despite how much of a kaiju fan I may be, I see the limitations of interest in these films and realize I've outgrown them somewhat, and nostalgia is the strongest level of affection I have for the giant monster sub-genre at this point. I'm a huge Batman fan and I like all versions of Batman, but I guess my love of Godzilla is sort of akin to that Batman fan who only loves the campier Adam West's interpretation. Don't get me wrong, I'm open and really want a darker, grittier, more realistic Godzilla film, but they just haven't made a great one just yet, because they get bogged down with focusing on characters that no one really cares about.

Hope they continue the trend. We can bring back Mothra, Ghidorah, Gigan, etc. later.
And we have to remember Godzilla 2000 was a response to the '98 movie where it was just Godzilla (well, it could be argued whether that actually was Godzilla ), so him fighting a monster in that was probably done as yet another way to distance it from that film and reinforce the "hey, we're back to the Japanese way of doing things". I'm sure it would've been a solo outing if not for that.

I wonder what kind of monsters will show up if there are sequels. I'd love to see some of the more overlooked ones return, kaiju like Gabara (yes seriously), Megalon, Titanosaurus and even some from the Heisei era like Biollante, SpaceGodzilla and Destoroyah.

This seems to be the way Legendary is interested in portraying their lead monsters.
Well I saw no evidence the 2014 Godzilla was heroic or a savior of mankind. He was not trying to kill the MUTOs to save humanity from them. The MUTOs were parasites that laid their eggs in the bodies of other giant monsters like wasps do with caterpillars. Godzilla was fighting to protect himself not humanity. If you walk through a meadow you probably trip and mess up the homes of plenty of tiny creatures and not even notice or even think about it. Humanity were just insects to Godzilla not worth attacking or protecting

A modern SpaceGodzilla would be awesome! Destroyah should be saved for last and should be man made threat far more dangerous Godzilla.

Needless to say, I agree completely.

I never saw Godzilla as defending humanity, he was always defending his territory and eliminating threats to himself. Humans are clearly no threat to him so he had no interest in ruining our anthills or killing us.

I'm sure this has been brought up already but I'm not so sure how the hell this movie is going to work especially with the newly established size of Godzilla. I mean they had to do some size adjusting for the original film but I don't know how that would work here. If King is anywhere near the size of Godzilla skull island will have to be absolutely massive to be able to hide him long enough for the Skull Island film to actually go anywhere or else he would be seen immediately towering over the highest points of the island.

Oh man. This whole thing is just pathetic. We have finally revamped King Kong and a difficult to revamp Godzilla (under great scrutiny from TOHO). And the studio retards are ready to put them together??! Now the in new upcoming Godzilla we're talking Rodan, King Ghidora, and Mothra (of which I've already seen early concept art and I'm, blown away) Now all of that is't enough. Now they want to entertain an 'mercanized creature that is one 1/5 (generous) the size of the modern day GZ. I'm guessing they'll have to make GZ vs. KK as a weak pathetic attempt on the studio to get cash. Executives are screaming "Bigger, significantly bigger 'SPLOSIONS and MAYEM!!" KK will have to be immune to GZ atomic breath (as if anything is) and he will have to be tons faster which would make it a long drawn out boring-asseed chase through the city (build up the "suspence) as KK hides behind a building being approached bu GZ) Ooooooooo the suspense... All of this with finality that ends in a "draw" ... nobody actually "wins".

What a weak pathetic excuse of the studio to grab some cash. Nah, they can have someone else's loot.

Besides I already saw King Kong verses the dinosaur(s). That scene already dragged on tooooooo long and drawn out. About 7:35 minutes which seems more like 20 minutes. My God!! Boooooooooooooooooooooring

He would indeed, and I'd love to see how they designed him. These Heisei monsters have a lot of potential and I can only hope they get to return one day.

It will certainly be interesting to see how they solve this issue. I can see three possible ways to go about it:

1. Kong will be scaled up to match Godzilla better, but not exactly the same size. Legendary's Godzilla is officially 350 feet/106 meters tall, they could make Kong around maybe 75-85 meters, which is huge but not fully as extreme, and still big enough for him to keep up with Godzilla when they fight (remember he's smaller than the T. rex in the original, he rides on its back at points of the fight, but still wins in the end). The male MUTO was half as big as Godzilla and still put up a fight, so Kong could be formidable at this size.
2. Kong will be explained as being younger in Skull Island, which will seemingly take place in the early '70s, then by the time we catch up to him in the present he's grown and is closer to Godzilla.
3. Kong will be some form of supernatural being who can change size (this one feels a little lame though).

Either way, Skull Island will definitely have to be a pretty big island in this version, with some huge valleys, mountains and trees to hide the massive ape.

I still think that King Kong will be more of a guardian beast, like the type that Godzilla was suggested to be in the 2014 movie. As such he will be sized accordingly.

The whole idea is lame. Godzilla had plenty of foes to fight....don't need a 25 ft gorilla

Sorry for the delay in response, it's been a while since I've been to this thread.

Um... I don't know... it's hard to explain.

I've seen every Godzilla movie and then some from the Kaiju genre multiple times, and I still have a certain level of affection for them -- but through the years, I sort of go through my waves of when and how much I like them.

As a kid myself, I absolutely loved them. Godzilla was probably my favorite character, even more than Spidey, Superman, and Batman. But eventually I just grew out it and embraced the more human superhero characters in comics as I got older (X-Men ruled), and eventually kind of just lost interest in Godzilla (which may be one of the reasons why the Heisei period is my least favorite era).

Eventually, I had a kid of my own and introduced him to the Godzilla movies, and also saw the Millennium films for the first time, which renewed my own interest in them. Revisiting them with my son had strengthened my appreciation for them, but at the same time, as an adult, they sort of depreciated the more and more I watched them again. Nostalgia may be the strongest tie I have to them. There are some Godzilla movies I still very much adore, but for the most part, I just think I've gotten my fill of that particular genre or franchise at this point. I've realized a lot of things just don't hold up for me as far as the formula of all these movies go. Even the new Godzilla movie and Pacific Rim, as much as I enjoyed them the first time I saw them, don't have that much of a repeat value with me. I think I'm just a fan with limited appreciation.

King Kong (1933) -- yes, I'm counting that, Godzilla/Gojira (1954) -- of course!, King Kong vs. Godzilla, Son of Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) -- still my favorite!, and strangely enough Godzilla: Final Wars are the ones that I've gotten the greatest satisfaction out of. They're the ones that are most dearest to my heart as a kid and as a father. These are the films I enjoy most and can watch over and over again. Anything else seems to dilute my appreciation of the genre.

Okay, that makes more sense. I think we all have genres and series we lose interest in and maybe even get back into later on. I liked Godzilla for awhile as a kid but wasn't a gigantic fan or anything. Since early 2014 I started getting into the franchise and now I really like it. Well, most of the films. Some I don't like, as you'd expect with 27 sequels. I've even recently rewatched, rated, ranked and reviewed all of them.

All of those Godzilla movies you mentioned are good and some are even among my favorites, too.

‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ to Roar Into Theaters in 2020 as Part of New Monster Universe

It’s official: the monsters Godzilla and King Kong will be doing battle on the big screen. Legendary Pictures announced today that following the release of Kong: Skull Island in 2017 and Godzilla 2 in 2018, they’ll be partnering with Warner Bros. to produce Godzilla vs. Kong for a 2020 release date, confirming a trio of interconnected films and a new monster universe.

The prospect of a team up film had been brewing over the past few months, but its practicality was murky given that Legendary’s deal was now set up over at Universal Pictures, which was producing Kong: Skull Island. Understandably, Universal wasn’t thrilled about laying groundwork for a future Warner Bros. film in their King Kong movie. The fix? Legendary is heading back to Warner Bros. for this interconnected monster universe. The studio will maintain its new home at Universal, but Kong: Skull Island—which begins production on October 19th—is moving to Warner Bros., which is still set as the distributor of Godzilla 2.

As announced at Comic-Con last summer, Legendary now has the rights to Toho monsters Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah, who may or may not be making appearances in the Godzilla sequel, which has Gareth Edwards attached to return and direct after he completes his Star Wars movie Rogue One. But the press release makes clear that this is an interconnected universe, so appearances in Skull Island can’t be entirely ruled out.

he Kong film has Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kings of Summer) at the helm with a cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, and Toby Kebbell. The latter actor is listed last on the cast sheet, and given his stellar work as Koba in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, I have to wonder if he’ll be performing the motion-capture for the monstrous Kong.

No word on who will direct the big battle film Godzilla vs. Kong, but with an unspecified 2020 release date, there’s still plenty of time to figure that out. Kong: Skull Island arrives in 3D and IMAX 3D on March 10, 2017 and Godzilla 2 is slated for June 8, 2018—which is two weeks before Universal’s Jurassic World sequel (throw that shade, WB!). Check out the full press release below.
Quote:
Burbank, CA – October 14, 2015 – Following Legendary’s and Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2014 success with the global reinvention of the Godzilla franchise, the companies have come together to create an epic, new shared cinematic franchise. All-powerful monsters become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and Legendary’s King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film, will expand their mission across multiple releases.

The announcement that the reinvention of monsters continues was made today by Legendary CEO, Thomas Tull, and Kevin Tsujihara, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. The initial trio of films are 2017’s KONG: SKULL ISLAND; GODZILLA 2 in 2018; and then GODZILLA VS. KONG, arriving in theaters in 2020. While Legendary maintains its new home at Universal Pictures, the GODZILLA films remain in partnership with Warner Bros., who will now also distribute KONG as a part of this franchise. Production on KONG: SKULL ISLAND begins October 19th.

Warner Bros. and Legendary released Godzilla in May 2014 with an agreement to release Godzilla 2 on June 8, 2018. Both films feature the humanMonarch organization. Shortly following Legendary’s pact with NBC Universal, Legendary acquired rights to additional classic characters from Toho’s Godzilla universe, including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. This paved the way for developing a franchise centered around Monarch and anchored by Godzilla, King Kong, and other famous creatures.

When Legendary announced films centered on Godzilla and Kong, fans all over the world speculated these two characters might one day meet in the same film. Classic Toho monsters including King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan, as announced at Comic-Con 2014, may also join the Legendary pantheon of giant monster mayhem going forward.

“Audiences really responded to Godzilla,” stated Tull. “Today, I’m excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I’ve always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we’re pleased to be announcing that and more.”

“Working with our partners at Legendary, we enjoyed tremendous creative and commercial success with `Godzilla,’” said Tsujihara. “It’s great to be able to revisit these characters and help create a franchise with so many creative possibilities for filmmakers. Fans love these big, globally iconicfilms and it doesn’t get any bigger than this.”

We knew this was coming when the rumors about a King Kong/Godzilla crossover surfaced. Personally I don't mind, and I doubt "cinematic universe" in this case will amount to much more than multiple giant monsters co-existing in the same universe and occasionally fighting and/or teaming up with each other after being introduced in their own solo movies. Basically what Toho have always been doing with Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, etc. in other words.

2020 though? Yikes. I mean, it makes sense considering Godzilla 2 isn't coming until '18, but still. That's half a decade, a long time to wait.

2020 though? Yikes. I mean, it makes sense considering Godzilla 2 isn't coming until '18, but still. That's half a decade, a long time to wait.
it is, but at least we have two solo films to get us ready for them getting together. I wonder what else they can do with this fledgling franchise. Maybe this world is also one where the Pacific Rim Jaegers exist.
