4K UHD disc sales are still tiny compared to sales of DVD/Blu-ray Discs in UK
There is yes an increase of 4K TV'S purchased in the UK and main reason for this is most new TV's on the market for sale are 4K but a lot of these consumers who have these 4K TV's have not upgraded to purchasing UHD discs yet a lot are sticking with DVD or Blu-ray There is more uptake of 4K streaming using Netflix and other streaming services providing 4K than UHD disc sales. As with any new format there is an increasing numbers that are purchasing 4K UHD discs but reality is it's still tiny in comparison to sales of Dvd and Blu-ray discs New films are mostly what gets released in UK on 4K UHD with small amount of back catalog A lot of steelbook new release releases for example in UK are split between 2D/3D and 4K/2D with most of the print run going towards 2D/3D steelbooks Same steelbook just discs content and jcard changed HMV yes have being doing all in one 4K/2D/3D steelbooks but these are struggling to sell out at full price Halloween 1978 I agree would likely sell well on UHD in UK/Europe but a lot of the smaller film distributors in UK with back catalog titles are not in a rush to do 4K UHD at the moment Universal/Warner/Sony/Fox are the ones who have mostly in UK who have released back catalog titles on 4K UHD Halloween 2018 the new film when released on home media will likely see 4K UHD release in UK as that will be a universal release If halloween 1978 had of been distributed in uk by universal instead of lionsgate you would have seen that release for sure on UHD I'm sure it will happen lionsgate do a 4k UHD release but you might be left waiting awhile Last edited by paulboland; 08-12-2018 at 12:55 PM. |

The lack of a UHD release of Halloween in the UK doesn't really surprise me,i get the impression that maybe horror films just don't sell well here(in HD at least)
Note that Lionsgate have released many, many Blu-Ray's here, yet with the recent Leatherface(2017) film, they only released it on DVD here, yet Lionsgate did a Blu-ray in the US,Germany got a Blu-Ray,in fact,so did most countries. Warner's batch of Hammer Horror's that they own(Taste The Blood Of Dracula etc)you would think would sell here, especially, and yet they have released Blu-Ray's of those films in the US,Germany,Spain and France, but not here. I buy a lot of horror films and ideally want them in HD,but i have got maybe 30+ quite new horror movies(most from the last decade,so would have easily accessible HD elements) that i have had to buy from Germany over the last few years, because they only received a DVD release here. There is actually a lot,lot more than that available that i would have liked that are DVD only here, but Germany censor's horror films quite heavily, the one's i have purchased are only the uncut one's. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a Halloween UHD from Italy,Germany,France and other European countries down the line. Last edited by profondomondo; 08-12-2018 at 10:56 PM. Reason: typo |

Yeah, I know all those labels like Arrow and 88 films really had trouble getting off the ground.

I was generalising, clearly there will be exceptions, where companies have a different proposition via increased focus on extra's,transfers, low pricing, limited releasing,or just plain better marketing,to make them more successful and to stand out.

It's either a repackage of the 35th Anniversary Edition or - more likely - a budget release rushed out to coincide with the release of the new film. I've got both the Scream Factory box set and the UK Steelbook, so I'm content until I switch to 4K.

Leatherface 2017 which is one of Lionsgate's higher profile recent horror titles was only given a DVD here, although it was given a Blu-Ray release virtually everywhere else, that is why i was expressing my lack of surprise that they aren't doing a UHD of Halloween here,at least it's better than just a DVD. ![]() I don't know what else you can conclude from those facts, other than that horror doesn't do as well on Blu-Ray here as it does in other countries(this could well be the same across all genres, not just horror, but horror is what i pay attention to more than anything else) If you still don't know what i'm talking about, sorry, but i can't think of any simpler way of explaining. |

I am with you on this profondomondo, sure we have quite a lot of Boutique labels in the UK but a quick step into your local HMV and looking at their BluRay horror range in comparison to their DVD horror range will give any doubters a clear indicator that the horror we got on BluRay is just a slice of the horror films being released on home video. There is often no clear rhyme or reason behind it, either.
Take a film like The Ritual, a British film, one released in HD on Netflix in the US and on BluRay in the US, but only available either on DVD or HD on Amazon Prime in the UK. Most of the horror films in my collection are either imports from Germany or Australia or region free releases from the states. |

4K screens are available at low prices and it's difficult to find flagship screens that aren't 4K, what's held it back (in my opinion) has been the price of the players. There are now some around at £200, which is where I think they'll start to be accepted by mainstream buyers but adding to the confusion is the HDR10/HDR10+ and Dolby Vision business. Maybe the market is changing and disc players won't sell and streaming will become dominant.

Yep, also I have never had a issue getting all the horror films I want via Amazon. I’m just not seeing it. It maybe these guys like low budget indie horror almost exclusively and those titles are always touch and go whether they see Blu-ray or not. Even then, HMV do a few exclusives. I got RAW through them last year.

UHDs seem to be a bit more stealthy in their roll out.
Anyone buying a new TeeVee these days will invariably have to go for a 4K model. Add to that most will have consoles capable of playing the discs, chances are people will pick a few up cheap just because they can watch them. |
