I'm not officially starting yet, but the other day to kill some time, I watched my digital copy of:

Thought I'd give it another chance. The cast is fine, but I hate the writing and direction, and some of the effects especially the cartoony version of the logo coming to life. Stupid villain too, but that was part of the writing. I still want to see more Ghostbusters but they better do it right. Not hard to fix.

I have never tried this before and quite honestly I am not a Horror fan. So while my list may be a bit lighter or go in some odd directions they will all be movies that put me in the Halloween mood. Who knows I may even check out some of those "classics" I have never seen!

The House on Sorority Row (1983) -

I watched the remake in cinemas back in 2009 and since then have always wanted to watch the original. I finally bought the blu-ray last week, and loved this movie so much. It has terrific music and some great atmosphere. I also liked how
[Show spoiler]the movie mostly takes place over one day
.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) -

This used to be my favourite horror remake, however upon this rewatch I didn't find it to be that great, still good however - I love how it takes its time and surprisingly is a largely bloodless affair (something that the prequel would attempt to fix).

Ragini MMS 2 (2014) -

This Indian erotic horror movie is neither sexy nor scary, instead relying too heavily on comedy (which unsurprisingly isn't funny) and various jump scares and cheap special effects. It does have a certain charm, this being the third time I've seen this movie! So it must be doing something right, either that or it's the fact the movie stars ex-adult film star Sunny Leone

Wolfcop (2014) -

I didn't find this film funny - I appreciated the amount of work put into this project, the effects were great, but it was too rushed and aside from the
[Show spoiler]prison cell sex scene
, there wasn't anything memorable.

I have 2 more to go for the day and night but here is my schedule.

Tremors
American Psycho
Mr. Brooks (It's such a shame the trilogy never came to fruition but luckily the first one comes to a satisfying conclusion as a standalone film)

I quite liked that one. I've always felt that 'Alien' must have been heavily influenced by it.

Fender Bender (2016) -

The artwork on the Scream Factory blu-ray is fantastic and what got me interested in watching this movie. I loved the killer and the slow pace. Makenzie Vega is a good actress and makes for a good lead.

Mayhem (2017) -

I was a fan of Joe Lynch's Everly, and this film is just as good, if not better! Steven Yeun is a relatable guy so it's very easy to root for him in this movie. Samara Weaving is equally awesome and after this and The Babysitter, I would like to see her in some more horror movies.

I want to do this as I have a big stack of unwatched blus but I know I will fail. I normally don't have the time to watch movies during the week.

Pred-a-thon...!

9/10/18:

-Predator (1987):

With the latest installment in the franchise due out this Friday, time to dig in like an Alabama tick. The 1987 original remains a quintessential hunk of 80's action cinema, a canny mixture of Rambo and Alien featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger leading a pack of highly-trained special-forces operatives (including fellow future governor Jesse "The Body" Ventura, Carl "Apollo Creed" Weathers and Lethal Weapon screenwriter and future The Predator director Shane Black) into a sweltering third-world jungle in order to rescue some high-value targets, only to find themselves relentlessly picked off one-by-one by an intergalactic big game hunter (the 7' 2'' Kevin Peter Hall, underneath a terrific makeup design by Stan Winston). This is a movie that -- for all the bubblegum one-liners and unfettered, high-octane machismo on display -- plays with audience expectations in a fairly ingenious way, stripping away Arnie's comrades and weaponry piece-by-piece until it climaxes in a mano a mano slugfest between Predator and prey where the Schwartz is forced to outthink his hulking adversary. It's positively primal, and director John McTiernan (who would go on to make Die Hard and The Hunt For Red October in rapid succession, an impressive triple-whammy he's never lived up to since), aided by Alan Silvestri's memorable, percussive score, generates true action-movie jollies in the first half and true, sweat-inducing suspense in the second. This is a piece of red-meat action/horror cinema that'll make you a goddamn sexual Tyrannosaurus...just like me.

A busy weekend for movies ... if a little disappointing over-all:

SEPTEMBER WARM-UP

Blue = blu-ray, * = first time viewing

[Show spoiler]The Orphanage (2007) A well-made, creepy, slow burn horror film. Very effective, and surprisingly moving at the end. This got our annual MonsterFest off to a great start!
Village Of The Damned Hadn't seen this in a few years. I forgot how very well-made and effective it is. Terrific movie, and a great looking new blu-ray from Warner Archive.
* The Devil's Daughter (1973) 1/2 (YouTube) My wife and I are old enough to have seen a lot of silly 70's TV movies as kids and we have a soft-spot for them. This is a completely predictable "Rosemary's Baby" rip-off -- campy, and a LOT of nostalgic fun. Decent cast too, with Shelly Winters, Joseph Cotton and a post "Dark Shadows" Jonathon Frid. We liked it ... but if you grew up after the '70's, you'll want to knock a couple of skulls off.
The Dead Zone Easily my favorite SK adaptation -- great story, great cast. Brooke Adams is beautiful! A favorite. Imported the Australian blu-ray. A little disappointing. Sound is definitely an upgrade, picture is too, but it's subtle.
Ghost Story (1981) 1/2 Another old favorite. I'm a sucker for slow-burn, well-crafted ghost stories ... and this one has those qualities in spades. Cool to see these old-time actors -- the cast is excellent -- along side Alice Krige, who is perfection as Eva/Anna. Loses half a star for over-reliance on shock cuts to gooey dead faces. They get a bit repetitive after a while, and they're not necessary in this movie -- it's strength is "eerie", not shock.

*The Little Stranger (2018) theatrical Gee, I wanted to love this. It looked like the kind of subtle ghost story that's right up my alley, but I guess even subtle can be overdone. EVERYTHING is laid between the lines, to the point that I really didn't understand what happened in the film. Had to read about it afterwards to figure out what I missed. Good premise, well made and well acted ... but it needs at least a LITTLE more overt storytelling. A big disappointment.

*Cronos (1993) :1/2 This didn't do much for me either. Some nice moments early on, but mostly gooey and pointless. *sigh*

*Cat Creature (1973) youtube 1/2 OK, I knew this wasn't going to be good, but I thought it would be entertaining. As I said (see: The Devil's Daughter) I have a fondness for campy 70's TV movie horror. I don't mind if they're silly, over-acted, unbelievable ... but this one was dull. How do you take a plot about a 2,000 year old cat creature stalking Los Angeles and make it boring? Simple: all "cop investigation" and very little cat. Interesting cast though -- Peter Lorre Jr? Who knew?
(NOTE: OK, this is weird! Peter Lorre Jr wasn't related to Peter Lorre! Check this out: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0521137/bio)

The Grudge (2004) 1/2 The best of the weekend ... and the only one I had seen before. Not a great movie by any means, but fun and entertaining. (Are you listening, Cat Creature?)

Happy Birthday to Me (1981)

Today was my birthday, so I decided to watch this slasher for the first time. It should be slightly shorter but the 80s mood and giallo style make up for any shortcomings. Apparently I also share my birthday with Fred Olen Ray so I will most likely be re-watching Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers next

6. THE MUMMY 1932
The ancient Egypt flashbacks are pretty cool. Boris Karloff is great as always. The only negative is like the other classic Universal Monster movies, it runs barely more than an hour leaving me wanting more.

7. THE THING 1982
One of the all time great sci-fi / horror movies. I like the creature effects more now than I did when I first saw this. Kurt Russell and Wilford Brimley stand out but I enjoy all the actors in this movie.
