Default La La Land

Hey look, some colors!

Album

Quote:
With a similar highlight roll-off the HDR version would on average be equivalent to the SDR version with peak white at 195 nits (Gamma at 2.40), based on 18 samples. (Min: 94, Max: 340, Median: 190)

Wow, I might get LA LA Land on 4k. Looks like it really takes advantage of the format.

Pyoko, can you do me a favour? Take a cap of the bit when they visit the Tesla exhibit at the Griffith Observatory and tell me what colour you see, is it royal blue or a raging purple? I'm not after any heat maps or gamut analysis per se, I'd just like a second opinion.

Is there anyway to capture JPEG XR with any of the standard software players? Things like Pot Player or VLC.

There goes the theory that nothing will be used outside of P3. That's a surprise.

@Pyoko, if you saved your ripped pictures to your harddisk, you could run them through your analysis scripts to complement your old heatmap-only caps. That would be much appreciated to have the old ones "completed"

That's soo awsome stuff, keep them rolling!!!

I doubt either of those can. You can do so with Xbox Game Bar, though.

It's screen capture software designed for games, but works for other media as well. If you've got an HDR capable PC hooked up to an HDR display, Xbox Game Bar will allow you to capture HDR images in JXR format.

The HDR, the colors, the film look, it's a great disc.

More blue than purple, definitely not raging, but there's also definitely a slight reddish component in there, more than on the BD.

I'm in the process of doing that as it's very easy, just gotta upload and edit the posts.

Yeah, it's pretty cool.

I took a couple of screens from Rambo: Last Blood. The JXR caps can be viewed in HDR via the default photo app in Windows.

Nits are not a function of the recording medium but the mastering that's been done to it, e.g. the MaxCLL on Wizard of Oz is like 2000 nits IIRC.
Right. My bad. I was too quick, so I looked at the nits statistics quoted under each analysis and assumed it was the max nits for the 4K HDR, e.g. "Max: 342" for post #10. I now see that I have to click on the HDR image screenshot to display it and check the "Peak:" nits value shown to the left in the image to see that.

Anyway, my point was that older film likely does not handle HDR as well as newer film (or newer movies shot on digital). So for older film, assuming it has been mastered properly, will it ever reach close to 1000 nits, or the max nits comfortably handled by OLED TVs (~750 nits for 10% of screen covered, ~400 nits for 25%, ...)? I know e.g. post #10 shows that older film surely can be mastered on 4K HDR to use 1000+ nits, but then it has not been mastered properly as I understand it. And then I'm not just talking about the average brightness having been bumped. Surely there must be some drawbacks of using max 1000+ nits mastering for an old film that does not handle HDR well (e.g. more pronounced noise, banding, or similar, ...)?

Matrix is clearly mastered without any P3 confines.
EDIT: And Shape of Water.

I've gone through all the old posts and added gamutmaps, I've also added an index with links in the first post. As expected for the most part the "Beyond 709" content is fairly limited to accents here and there. The Shape of Water has the most due to the warmth of the grade. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is also fairly colorful, and The Matrix has some stuff outside P3.

@andreas: No, you are right. it is the "supernatural" green that is mostly "out of bounds".
