I got confused for a sec because the thread title says HBOMax. I was wondering if there were 2 new animated series.

Looks good.

If Batman didn't have plenty of female villains already...

It really doesn't make any sense. If you want to add more women create a new character or use a lesser known character. Guess they just wanted to try and drum up some controversy.

More (good) original characters would be nice, yes.

Since they've already been altered so, would hope the show deals with the racial and sex factors in having a black commissioner and colored female psychiatrist in the 1940s, but doubt the two of them will have to face the adversity Samuel J. Battle (who only rose to Parole Commissioner) and Dr. Margaret Chung faced. Highly improbable for two such rare examples of minorities in positions of authority and medicine to be applicable to this limited collection of 1940s characters. If it's mostly or completely ignored, then it's as bad as Cruella pretending an Indian could have risen through the police ranks to Commissioner in racist 1970s London. Like slavery, the Civil War and Segregation didn't happen in the Chicago/NYC-inspired world of Batman.

Voice acting for Catwoman and Harley feels a little boring compared to the Animated Series.

This is excellent.

In my head this is an Elseworlds universe, so any gender/race stuff is out the window.

The Noir score is great. The animation is VG++.

Seeing the "original" iterations of classic villans is a breath of fresh air, even if The Brave & The Bold sorta beat them to the punch in that aspect.

Original fat Alfred. The Spectre/Jim Corrigan as a cop pre transformation.

Bruce ususally deals w/ Zantana or Jason Blood for Magic stuff......good to see him deal w/ a Constantine character for one the episodes.

No nostagia, no fan service, no rehash, no "lets do this arc"........just what I needed.

Youre applying real world schitt to an imaginary universe.
Can you imagine that certain social ills were disintergrated in this universe.

Of course a Black Commish in 1940 is a stretch....In OUR universe.
Yet Batman can stay 30 years old for 70 years.

Can't wait to give this one a go. BTAS was, and is, such an influential show for me. I don't think it can ever be topped, but it's good to see that that doesn't really seem to be their angle.

I'm actually kind of excited about the new takes on the characters. Some of them, like Penguin, have never really been my favorite villains, so any way to spice them up a bit and make them feel fresh and new is welcome in my book. I don't get the people who keep saying that "such and such racial or sex thing wouldn't have flown in the 40's". Like others have said- it's fiction. It's not meant to be realistic. But hey, it's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. They'll get flak for even doing it, even if the show doesn't call attention to it, but if they do call attention to it, then they'll be labeled as pushing an agenda. It's Batman, ya'll. Even the more realistic takes on him like Nolan and Reeves are ever-so-slightly elevated. He exists in a universe with killer clowns, giant morphing clay men, a guy with half his body burned off who's up and walking around, a lady who controls plants, a guy who lives in a cryogenic suit, not to mention all the aliens, ghosts, zombies, robots, etc. But it's the gender swap on a short, pudgy mobster/nightclub owner that people can't fathom? Or the black commissioner? Come on, now.

Comics, and by extension their adaptations, have always been about things that are larger than life. They're escapism, and yes, they often do promote "agendas" like tolerance, equality, etc. They're not meant to be taken too seriously, even the more serious ones, and they're certainly not meant to be a 1:1 reflection of our world. It's a world where anything can happen, yet it's the most mundane things like race or gender that get fans riled up. Doesn't make sense to me. So let's just have fun with it.

Anywho, stepping off my soapbox now. I'll be back after I've watched a few episodes.

I wanted to watch this last night but my tv for some reason just wouldn’t connect to the internet. I was too tired to try to fix it. Now today we have to put our dog to sleep. I’m not sure I’ll be in the mood to watch much or anything today.
