So, Yippee Ki-Yay Mother Video now has 8 exclusive Albert Pyun Blu-rays listed on their website. I'll list them below with what I know about their release dates. I emailed them and got a response, plus there's info on their website. But if anyone here has any opinions on the films themselves, please share. I would love to get them all, but they're expensive at $40 a pop plus shipping. I'm just not sure about some of these films, though I ordered and watched Captain America (awesome!) and pre-ordered Cyborg as well (looking forward to the new cuts!).

Captain America
- in stock, but only 47 left as of now
Road to Hell - pre-order went to press last week!
Cyborg - pre-order going to press in early September
Interstellar Civil War - pre-order going to press in about a week
Cheryl Cooper/Infection double feature - estimated Q3 release
Left for Dead/Bullet Face double feature - estimated Q3
Knights - estimated Q4
Ticker Director's Cut workprint - estimated Q4

I strongly encourage all AP fans who haven’t yet done so to grab their copy of Captain America while they can. Absolutely essential. I have Cyborg (Director’s Cut and other versions!) and Road to Hell on preorder. I think I’m gonna add Knights and Ticker next payday. I really hope Knights will be in full remastered widescreen HD at last; I’ve still never seen it, so I think I’ll wait for this Blu-ray.

I just ordered the UK DVD of Adrenalin: Fear the Rush (1996), which contains the longer European release version, and runs 94 minutes in PAL, which would be about 98 minutes at 24fps. That’s a full 21 minutes longer than the severely butchered 77 minute MiramAxed US Blu-ray version, although still running about twelve minutes shorter than Albert’s full 110 minute director’s cut. I’m really looking forward to watching this film for the first time, and it only cost me $11 shipped on eBay. I hope the full director’s cut can be put out by Yippee at some point. Here’s a rave review of the European cut of the film, which sealed the deal for me:

Another one to add to the first post: the Blu-ray of Albert’s director’s cut of Captain America.

Just watched CYBORG (1989) for the first time since the theatre. Time has been very kind to it. Loved it, much better than I remembered. Probably my fave JCVD film I’ve seen. He’s actually a bit sensitive and vulnerable in this one. And the cinematography, lighting, production design, and direction are very good and atmospheric for such an underfunded film; it looks great, with Albert (as always) wringing every last penny out of the meagre budget (under $500,000). It was filmed using sets and costumes that were created for Cannon’s aborted He-Man sequel and Spider-Man movie, and then substantially reshaped by JCVD and Sheldon Lettich in the editing room after reshoots, but you’d never know it from the finished product. An extremely entertaining, endearingly eccentric, perfectly paced little post-apocalyptic sci-fi/action thriller, with well-choreographed fight scenes, respectable world-building, some choice villainous scenery-chewing, and style to burn. And ya know, I even didn’t mind Kevin Bassinson’s synth score; he’s no Tony Riparetti to be sure, but it kinda grew on me after a while, wasn’t as droning as I expected from what I remembered. Yup, it’s official: CYBORG RULES. And the 88 Blu looks and sounds lovely and is stacked with extras.

My girl and I just watched ALIEN FROM L.A. for the first time, courtesy of VinSyn’s excellent Blu-ray. My capsule review:

Wanda Saknussemm (Kathy Ireland) is a nerdy bespectacled social misfit with a squeaky voice who works at an L.A. diner. After getting dumped by her boyfriend for never wanting to go anywhere interesting or do anything exciting, she receives a letter from her archaeologist father’s friend telling her he fell into a bottomless pit in Africa and died. Leaving her boring old life behind, she flies to Africa to find out what happened, and while going through her father’s belongings she finds his notes about Atlantis, a lost civilization created by the landing of an ancient alien spaceship which then sank into the sea. She then discovers a chamber beneath her father’s apartment and ends up falling down the same pit as her father, and all of a sudden finds herself in Atlantis at the center of the Earth in ace cult film director Albert Pyun’s delightfully bonkers sci-fi adventure ALIEN FROM L.A. (1988). This was a first time watch for both of us, and we absolutely loved it. Borrowing liberally from Blade Runner, Brazil, and especially Journey to the Center of the Earth, with just a touch of The Wizard of Oz, and shot mostly on location in African gold mines on a budget of less than $1 million, the film takes all its inspirations and makes good on its own terms, and every single penny spent is right up there on the screen. The game cast is appealing and dedicated; the direction, cinematography and lighting are atmospheric and imaginative; the costumes, hairstyles, makeup, vehicles, and soundtrack songs are whacked out ‘80s punk/New Wave and wicked cool; and the whole thing is just one hell of a goofy good time, with a lot of heart. Kathy Ireland with her wide-eyed innocence is just plain adorable in the lead, and the supporting cast (including Thom Mathews of Return of the Living Dead and Linda Kerridge of Fade to Black) is also aces. My highest recommendation.

Be sure to check out Journey to the Center of the Earth (1988) for a nice little surprise.
