They were middling but OK in 1080p, but they've become quite something else in 4K.

If Shameless did 4Ks, I would expect them to have exactly the sort of issues Kino give theirs.

This smacks of a lovely co-op deal. Kino could then do all the folded-down 2.0 stereo remix tracks for the Mill Creek releases....

Genuinely asking. I haven't bought a title from them in a long while.
They're consistently inconsistent with their UHDs, A/V quality is all over the map. Been burned enough times by better international releases that I need to see positive user feedback/comments here before buying.

Some say it might be a Night 1990 4k announcement. A lot were hoping it's a Day or Dawn 4k release from Criterion announcement.

I had seen that and posted it in the Criterion thread. I highly doubt Criterion would release 90 or Day. Night and Dawn make sense, but the remake definitely doesn't feel "criterion".

We know a 4K of it is coming, I'd be shocked if it were Criterion. Just want it already.

it's going to be for a set of Night of the Living Dead / Criterion shirts.

Sony...you missed the boat for spooky season again. Where....is.....the....uhd?! You're just a big tease.

Hopefully they're just waiting for 2025, the 35th anny. And then, in 2030....the inevitable 4k steelbook upgrade with DV and a better encode.

I see you.....

Wall.E doesn’t scream Criterion either and they still released that.

They released it at the request of the director.

Please don't wish a CC-level encode on NOTLD 1990 after all this time, when it should rightfully be a Sony jam....

Criterion has released a lot of wild stuff over its history, and isn't just tony, snooty, highbrow library fare. It never has been solely that. Not in the laserdisc days, not in the DVD days, and not now. It's all about the frame - if they have a frame by which to present the movie, regardless the nature of its narrative content (i.e. its prurient, lowbrow, trash quotient!) they'll snap that title up if given the opportunity, give it a classy cover, and send it out the door.

There's nothing about Criterion that is "above" Day of the Dead, or the 1990 remake at all. Not currently, and certainly not historically.

"BREAKING NEWS
Ok, a lot of people have heard that a new release of Tom Savini’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1990) was being worked on. Work on special features for it started back in 2022. Well, Tom was at a convention recently and he talked about it. It sounds like Sony is doing a Director’s Cut of it. He said that it will be uncut and restored with a new opening going from black and white to color. Savini states that the movie used to be about 30% of what he envisioned, but now it’s going to be more like 60%. He talks about it in this video. Check it out, it’s a good watch, Greg Nicotero is there too answering questions. Tom talks about this news at around the 19 minute mark. With this news, it looks like we have something cool to look forward to in the new year."

Don't know if I care for the revisionism, but I guess we'll see what's included.

Sounds neat and all, but I hope we also get a uhd of the theatrical cut that we all know and love, in case we're not thrilled with a new 2024 version.

Why does this bring me flashbacks of Anchor Bay's infamous 30th Anniversary DVD of the original Night of the Living Dead with modern inserts? If this is ALL original footage, which I highly doubt, then it's great news but every article I've read about the remake over the years has said all the cut footage no longer exists. Please prove those articles wrong so I can jump for joy!

Seamless branching should make it easy to just switch to the normal movie after the B&W transition is over.

I can't believe Sony's been dragging ass on this so hard that I'd have to actually pull out and watch that grotty 8-year-old Umbrella disc if I wanna revisit this title right now. Ungh. I also can't stand the color palette on the 2018 Sony blu. Hopefully, any upcoming uhd will reflect something that's somewhere comfortably in-between the existing Umbrella and Sony blu rays in terms of color timing and contrast levels.
