I thought this was amazing. Yeah it's premise is basically a stew of other sci-fi stories and elements, but man was it so well made... and any lack of originality is redeemed by the amount of heart this film has. I teared up a few times during this film. Alfie is A-Frikkin-Dorable.
With only 80 million in budget, Edwards just schooled Hollywood on how to make a big epic film without spending triple that amount. |

It did so bad financially that execs quit and shifted The Bikeriders over to Focus Features (from Christmas to summer). No chance of a sequel.

I really wanted to like this film. But it's so boring and derivative.
I give Edwards and his crew all the credit in the world to take an $80-million budget and make a film that looks this big in scope, with well refined production values. Unfortunately, as a film, it's nothing but a lazy amalgamation of better, more refined sci-fi films that have not only done these types of stories better -- but have also done it with either equally impressive visuals, or better. John David-Washington was pretty bad in this, too. Hard to say if it's the result of a weak screenplay, empty direction, or him just not being a right fit for the character -- but this performance didn't instill any faith that he could ever carry a blockbuster film in the future. UHD disc looks admittedly terrific, however. |

I dont know why all Edwards' movies suffer from an inability to allow the audience to attach to its characters. Rogue One and Godzilla also suffered from this.
Visually stunning film which failed to engage me on any level, and felt exceedingly dull despite the non stop action sequences throughout. Its a puddle of a film that thinks its deep. Not even bad, but certainly a regrettable blind buy for me. Already returned my copy to Amazon. |

Just finished watching the 4K disc and it was demo. Fantastic release and one of my favorite films of the year.
What's even cooler is that they showed the proof of concept footage Gareth shot to get the film green-lit in the 55-minute making-of documenatry. That was awesome. Last edited by cheez avenger; 12-17-2023 at 10:19 PM. |

He's been schooling them since Monsters, which I think only cost 500K to make and looks like a 5-10 million dollar film. |

![]() ![]() Director Gareth Edwards, who helmed Monsters (2010), Godzilla (2014) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), has a gift for visually spectacular screen stories that instill an aura of grittiness and realistic scale to computer-generated images. His 2023 science fiction action movie, The Creator, is his greatest achievement with regard to the sights and sounds, with futuristic aircraft and robots that blend seamlessly with location footage shot in Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, and Nepal. The thematic aspects of the narrative do not gel quite as cohesively as the visual blend of real and fake, with plot turns that may leave viewers with more questions than answers. For me, the end result works best when taken in with a general “War is Hell.” air of unease, with the idea that one single attack atrocity justifies subsequent years of battle, prejudice, and population cleansing, ultimately feeding a vicious cycle of violence over generations, certainly being one with a contemporary relevance. There is a derivative feel to the proceedings, though, with elements that we have all seen in previous sci-fi offerings like Children of Men (2006), District 9 (2009), and Oblivion (2013). John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman, Tenet) is a great lead here as Joshua, a soldier who has a personal investment in the war against artificial intelligence after his family was killed during a nuclear explosion over Los Angeles, but who finds solace in a relationship with Maya, a woman, played by Gemma Chan, who believes that the AI robots may ultimately have an even greater capacity for compassion than humans do. When Joshua discovers a child robot, played by Madeleine Yuna Voyles, who was created as a meld between humanity and machine, his loyalties are tested. I like what The Creator has to say about mankind's capacity for dehumanizing populations in times of conflict, but I am never quite sold on the notion that AI is a catalyst to bring humanity closer to peace. A conclusion that should be heartwarming from a “messiah to deliver us from evil” standpoint mostly left me thinking that a whole lot of people died to get us to that uncertain point. I give it a pass, though, because everything just looks so awesomely cool. This is a treat for the eyes, even if it only grazes the brain. The 4K UHD Blu-ray looks remarkable. For some reason, my television screen went black and lost connection a couple of times during my first viewing (an issue easily remedied by rewinding the film a few seconds), leading me to wonder if there is a connection problem after a recent television software update with my Sony, but everything seems to be going well during a second viewing of the 4K disc as I write this. I haven’t done it, but Matt (member here) mentioned he might do the same with American Graffiti - just claim it’s defective and get a refund.
Nowadays, it’s almost guaranteed you’ll find a scratch anyways, so that’s a pretty good reason. |

This movie looks great. I liked Godzilla a lot and Rogue One was the best star wars movie since the original trilogy.
Also I thought John David washington was great in Tenet so I look forward to him in more roles. |
